I loaned my extra computer to a friend and when I got it back I tried to install a game for my daughter that she loves to play but every time I try to install it (clicking on the setup application) it comes up with this message:

    c:\Documents and Settings\Compaq_Administrator\My Documents\Toontown-setup.exe

Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item.

    ---------------
I don't know what is up with this. There is only one user account on this computer and of course it's the admin account. My friend said she doesn't know why it would be doing that. I am afraid that when she cleaned up the computer to give it back she may have messed something up. I know she somehow messed up Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel etc (it actually gives the same error when you try to open them).

Would anyone have any idea how to fix this? This computer didn't come with a disk to do a clean install or I'd just do that.

    TIA

Okay, I have been fooling around trying to figure this out and found out when I put the computer in Safe Mode with Networking I was able to install my daughters game and login and play. Microsoft Works opened with no problems, etc I did not get the error I reported in my original post. But when I restarted the computer and went back to regular mode and tried to open the game and Microsoft Works it went right back to the same error message. Gggrrrr!!

When I go into user account it shows that I only have one account "Compaq_Administrator". But when I boot up in Safe Mode it brings me to a screen to chose either "Compaq_Administrator" or "Administrator". I have checked the security settings and my account shows that it has full control.

    ???? What is going on??

Tried that. I restored it to a point just before I loaned it to her and I still have the same problems. I just can't figure out why things work fine in Safe Mode, but not in regular mode. I ran a couple virus/malware programs in safe mode and they found nothing. Weird. I tried updating my Java - uninstalled the old version (I was outdated on it, yikes!) but am unable to install version 18 even in Safe Mode. I forget the error it gave me. I will try it again when I get home.

    Penny,
Problems like that sound suspiciously like some malware. Go to the malware forums and run the "Read and Run Me First" instructions.
Those are the best malware detection/removal tools you can find and you have symptoms of malware presence, although the extra "administrator" account in safe mode is normal.
Many times things will work normally in safe mode when malware is present. If you can't run the scans in normal mode, run first in safe mode, then normal.
    Follow the instructions exactly!:wave
