I have loads of them, decided to get rid of old apps, files and check browser bookmarks for old and dead links, you know websites change over time.

Wish I had not started now old half way through the ones that are live now to see if they are something I still need.

Initial scan with AM-DeadLink (great app btw) found I had 1397 bookmarks, now down to 922 with more to go through.

So how many browser bookmarks do you have?

I shudder to think. I'm guessing I'm very close to where you are thought. I was just thinking the other day I needed to go through them, but even though I have nothing but time while I'm off work it just seemed like such a huge project I couldn't make myself do it.

I'll give the app a try, and see where that gets me. Thank you! :-D

As it turns out, I only have 877. However, the vast majority of bookmarks it says are dead links I use on a regular basis, so I know they are not, in fact, dead. :( Back to the drawing board.

Dead as in red colour or redirects?(redirects can be a PITA too), the app will let you open the page in the app to check, then you can update.

I have about 300. Only use about ten. Oh, but if I get rid of the rest I will, of course, need them right away! LOL.

Thanks for sharing David. It worked for IE10 and I could remove about 50 dead (red) links. Too bad that it didn't work in Firefox 26.0 while the same dead ones in IE10 are showing in Fx as well.

    Firefox= 1365 bookmarks
    IE10= 1015 after deleting those 50.

That's a pity oma, I guess as the app has not been updated for a while, it may not keep current with where Fx saves the bookmarks perhaps, sad that as I like the app but I do tend to use IE more than Fx Nightly or Chrome

I note you are as bad as me with bookmarks, just don't get me started on fonts! (I'm a font-a-holic)

Less than 50 links on file, not much of the internet worth saving anymore :-D

Part of my reasoning for doing this, taking longer than I thought to just check the links as a lot a troubleshooting links to fixes etc. I am tempted to save them all to a folder and start over again.

I must not be the average bookmarker. I don't save that many links anymore unless it is something I think I might forget about and need it. I usually just put what I am looking for in the search engine. On the days I am on my desktop instead of laptop I sometimes take a look and am surprised at what I thought I might want to look at again.:confusedrolleyes

Dead as in they're showing a 404 error, yet when I click on them the page comes up. :confused

Yeah, just as bad. LOL The difference of the count in my Fx bookmarks compared with IE10 can be attributed to having saved a lot of new bookmarks in Fx regarding Win 7. Keep in mind that all the saved bookmarks are as of 2003/2004. I used the free software Transmute to migrate the Fx bookmarks to IE. http://www.gettransmute.com/download/ and some info on it: http://www.gettransmute.com/ Keep in mind that when using transmute it will add all Fx bookmarks to any existing favorites in IE, so may produce duplicates.

I don't like to make negative remarks about software that may be quite useful, but I think AM-DeadLink should be used with caution.
I had used two versions spaced about two years apart with Opera browser, and in both cases it created a mess.
After the second use with a later version, I later discovered entire folders were missing.
Restoring them was a tedious process of locating the code within old bookmark HTML files,
extracting that code and inserting into current backups.

So I would advise caution when choosing what bookmarks to remove with that app.
After removals, check to see that what you want to keep is still there.

Wow Fred_G you must have an excellent memory by having so few bookmarks. :) My memory is like a colander. :cry

I just discovered that in Firefox profile folder>bookmarkbackups this:
    bookmarks-2014-02-02-1305.json

1305 being the amount of bookmarks on todays bookmarks backup.

Good to know if in case one has lost some bookmarks and therefore can check out or verify any other date of the bookmarkbackups. :cool

If you had to count over 1000 bookmarks you'd fall asleep. :major

    Hey, OMA, you're pretty sharp.
It never occurred to me that the end number was the number of bookmarks.

I'm a bit embarrassed to say that I had over 12,000.
Was able to remove more than 1,000 to begin with.

Problem is, some of the bookmarks are almost OK.
The site and the page are still there, but the address has changed slightly.
A minor change, and it's OK again.

Thanks for the tip about this addon.

Over 12K bookmarks? :eek I pronounce you as the King of Bookmarks. :major There I thought that I had way too many. :-D Glad that you could remove over 1K of them. In case you want to get them back, just restore to a previous one so that makes it easier to select a backup if you have lost bookmarks. Glad you like the extension.

Pale Moon browser doesn't show the amount of bookmarkbackups in their profile. No problem since I do a backup of Fx bookmarks weekly and restore them in Pale Moon so PM is always quite current.
