From systemtools, I go to disk clean up, then to scan disk, click on C drive for errors , then go through preform standerd test and scan disc surfaces
    for errors, and press start.
it shows checking files and folders gets about 2/3 done, then the comp. totally freezes, even the clock on the task bar stops, only way to get to the rest of the programs is to shut down and restart.
All I want to do is to DEFRRAG.

Don't know how this may be connected with the HD but the totally freeze symptom means either psu trouble or inefficient RAM. What are the system specs? How old is the PC?

Have you tried performing Scandisk and Defrag in Safe Mode? (Press F8 as the system finishes its POST (Power On Self Test).

Finnaly got the defraging working, before defraging you have to check the drive for errors(wi. '98) on there is a check box if you want errors fixed automaticly ones I took that of everyting went ok, not sure why but it workd.
