Trouble with IDE Channels/CD Rom running very slowly

The CD Rom on my son’s computer (Compaq Presario SR1630NX, it runs on the XP) started running extremely slowly. After researching the problem, I wonder if this has something to do with the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers. Currently, they are set up as follows-
Primary IDE Channel

Transfer Mode-DMA if available
Current Transfer Mode-not applicable (greyed out)

I have already tried uninstalling/reinstalling and updating the driver noted in the
DVD/CD-ROM drives. I have also tried enabling, disabling then re-enabling the device but that does not help. Can anyone help me figure out where the problem is?
