Hey sorry for the typo...it's "ipconfig"....ok here's the original message:

    Hi...

I'm having trouble with the DOS environment. I have winxp pro OS and whenever i try to use the ipconfig command, i get "ipconfig is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file".

The same thing goes when i try to use the "ping" command.

I've used both commands before with no problems.
    Any ideas?

    Thank you.

Do a search & see if you find the 'ping.exe' & 'ipconfig.exe' programs in your \windows\system32 folder. Sounds like they might be missing. Do any virus/trojan housecleaning of your computer lately?

    hey, thanks for your answer!

I did a search like you told me and i DO have both ping.exe and ipconfig.exe in my system32 folder. Weird uh??

I don't know what else could be. but thanks anyway.

Are you running them within a command prompt box and not run?

    Check your environment variables...

Right-click 'My Computer' and go to Properties.

Click the 'Advanced' tab and click the 'Environment Variables' button at the bottom (above OK button on mine).

Look for 'Path' in the System Variables list, click this, and click edit. Go through this and ensure that there is an entry like
    %SystemRoot%\system32;
(The entries are painful to look at as they are semi-colon seperated. I recommend copying and pasting the entry into something like Notepad where its a little easier on the eyes.
If there isn't the above entry then manually add it, so put a semi-colon on the end of the text if there isn't already one and add '%SystemRoot%\system32;'

Apply the changes and THEN START A NEW COMMAND WINDOW. This is important as these changes do NOT apply to any existing open command windows.

See if that works... If not then Im out of ideas...

If you type the command "set" ,no quotes, within a command prompt window it should bring up all the environment variables that are easier to read.

    thanks Quicksilver!!, it worked great!!

    there wasn't a system32 entry for "Path"

why do you think this happened?
    some kinda virus?

well anyway it's working fine now, thanks again!
