trouble with puter freezing

ok, i am working on my sisinaws puter. she has a dell with pent4 running xp and IE 7. i think the IE got updated. they don't know a whole lot about computers, so the updates i think got neglected. trying to do the updates and the thing keeps freezing up. i uninstalled their norton, installed avg antivirus. trying to get all the updates for windows installed too. i keep having a error message popping up say at startup on blue screen that driver_irql_not_less_or_equal. idechndr.sys fc4130f8 base at fc41000, date stamp 3bd89c65. i go to the intel site, and it says that i can uninstall the driver, but i don't want to do that yet until i have all the facts here. this is not my puter, so i want to be sure. i wanted to get all the things like this taken care of before i start on downloading things and posting an HJT log, ect for you guys to take a look at. also, this has 128 ram. is there a way to upgrade for more memory or something? they want to store pics, music and things and i think they don't have enough to do it with. it runs really slow. it does have enough gigs for storing, but i just dont know what's up with the freezing and this intel chip thing. thanks for any input-------

 

What ever you are trying to do will take a long time on this pc and may slow it down even further.

It's not clear if you can boot to Windows or not. Taking a guess I think perhaps you are opening too many Windows at once and trying to do too much cleaning and or updating at once.

Depending upon the original spec/state of the pc this process is likely to take many hours with long gaps whilst you are waiting for Windows to finish a task.

You can speed things up a bit by working in safe mode. Try also downloading and runninf Ccleaner from MG.
