I must be a total dunce. Can someone, in simple, plain English, tell me how to copy my hard drive in case I need to restore if I crash. Thanks

I take it you have Acronis True Image?

    Also which version?

I have and use version 8 but the steps should be similar to each version.

Start the software > select Create Image

the Wizard should start, so click next > then your shown a list of Hard Drives or Partitions dependent on your setup.

Choose the drive you wish to create a complete image backup from, in my case above its the C: XP OS drive and click Next.

Now you need to choose a location to save your image file to, choose from the list a location, it maybe a separate HD or Partition ( size depending as it will need to hold a large image file ), you can also choose CD or DVD to backup to but dependent on the size of your files it may span many CDs or DVDs.

I choose a separate HD, which I use for backups, seen below. Next you will need to type a file name or leave it as the default "mybackup.tib" and click Next

There will be a few options come up for you, I generally do not change any of them and just keep clicking next until the Proceed option comes up, which is the start of the backup procedure

Click Proceed and go make coffee for a short while, if you used the CD/DVD option for the storage location of the image files, you will need to swap to new blanks on occasion.

DO also remember to create the Bootable Rescue Media CD, as its needed in most cases for recovery.

This is the full manual for version 9 http://download.acronis.com/pdf/TrueImage9.0_ug.en.pdf Chapter 5 is what you will need to follow.

But the options should be no different to version 8.. apart from where version 8 says Create Image, version 9 says Backup , but do let me know.
