Hi! I received a forwarded e-mail, but don't believe everything that I receive. I would like your opinion as to whether or not this would work.

    Quoted from forwarded e-mail.............

"First, open your address book and click on add address, and it will bring up "new contact," just as you would do if you were adding a new friend to your list of email addresses. In the window where you would type your friend's first name, type in "A". For the screen name or email address, type
    AAAAAAA@AAA.AAA.

Now, here's what you've done and why it works: The "name" "A" will be placed at the top of your address book as entry#1. This will be where the worm will start in an effort to send itself to all your friends. But, when it tries to send itself to AAAAAAA@AAA.AAA, it will be undeliverable because of the phony email address you entered. If the first attempt fails (which it will because of the phony address), the worm goes no further and your friends will not be infected.

Here's the second great advantage of this method: If an email cannot be delivered, you will be notified of this in your In Box almost immediately. Hence, if you ever get an email telling you that an email addressed to AAAAAAA@AAA.AAAA could not be delivered, you know right away that you have the worm virus in your system. You can then take steps to get rid of it!"

    Would this work?

Who sent it? Pretty much ignore most "ideas" from strangers in emails, they are phishing. In general, being careful can usually keep you out of trouble.

    To avoid email spam:

1: Use your primary email for places and people you 100% trust. This does not include friends who like to email jokes and the like to 200 other friends. Those people tend to get infected and spread it to their contacts eventually.
2: When in doubt, use a free email service like http://www.gmail.com
3: Never unsubscribe unless its a trusted website, this is used by spammers to validate your email is still good so it can be sold in email lists.
4: Keep a spam filter onhand to filter emails like that, which may have known keywords flagging it as spam so you know. I use SpamFighter: http://www.majorgeeks.com/SPAMfighter_d4316.html

    Thats it!

The e-mail forward was sent "from a friend, of a friend, of a friend" type thing. I actually don't have very many contacts in my own address book, but I do receive on occasion, a forward that has "been around". I've been lucky, spam for me has been rare, and I haven't found any viruses on this computer... as of yet.

Thank you for your help and suggestions to avoid spam!

Friend of o friend of a friend sort of falls under #1 for me, the more it spreads, the less likely it is accurate. I never heard of the steps you mentioned.

Its a hoax, fallacy that AAAAA@AAAAA.com or the old one that went around many many years ago was that of having !0000 as the first entry in the address book to thwart spam or email harvesters were most likely written by the virus writers themselves, as they wont stop you being infected.

Reasons they wont work are that most email harvesting trojans work by collecting addresses or data from .txt, .doc etc etc files, plus many use their own SMTP engine to bypass the need for using your email client.

But MAs options on fighting spam are what I use, as that method works best, I do substitute spamfighter for Mailwasher tho.

May also be best to email your friend who sent it and have them not follow the method in the email but copy them MAs instructions on fighting spam ;)
