Please help. Basically I turned off my computer at the mains today and when I switched back on and rebooted it said something about True Vector error. Now my connection keeps going off every 4/5 minutes and it's driving me crazy. Was using Zone Alarm but uninstalled it thinking this would help. WRONG! I don't know much about these things.. what can I do????

Are you still getting the True Vector error after uninstalling ZoneAlarm or has that ended but the unstable connection continues?

What version of Windows are you using?
This should help if you are using Windows XP, if not let us know what version you are using so we can help.

    1. Go to start->run: services.msc, press enter highlight "true vector service" (or something very similar, may not exist; if it does not, go to step 2), double-click on it, change the startup type to "disabled".

    2. Go to start-> run: devmgmt.msc, go to view, choose "show hidden devices", look for "vsdatant" under "non-plug and play drivers", right-click on the device (if present), and choose "uninstall". Do not let the computer reboot if it asks you to. Then, search the harddrive for "vsdatant.sys", and rename it to "vsdatant.old".

    3. Reboot, and test. Best of luck!

EDIT: just realized the true vector error message is gone. This stuff still might help, though...

cheers Gecks. Had to go to step two, given option to uninstall vsdatant, clicked no, but then could not find vsdatant.sys on search of files and folders (including hidden ones). Where am I going wrong? What if i just reboot after uninstalling vsdatant? tAnd thanks for your solution in advance!

Reboot the computer, see if Vsdatant is still listed under "non-plug and play devices". If yes, right-click on it and choose "disable". Then reboot agaion to see if you still have problems. Best of luck!

OK, if you have Service Pack 2, go to start-> run:cmd (enter). At the command prompt, type in "netsh winsock reset" (no quotes), press enter, then reboot.

If you don't have Service pack 2, or if you get an error message when you try the netsh winsock reset, you would probably try the winsock fix major geeks has available: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4372

Please let us know how this goes!

I believe perhaps you should, very carefully, do this: http://nh2.nohold.net/noHoldCust25/Prod_1/Articles55646/ManualUninstall.html.

Be sure to back up any registry keys via the file->export menu before changing/deleting them, and make sure you follow the instructions exactly!

The theory is that Zonealarm did not uninstall completely, and that is why you are having problems.

    Best o'luck!

You can either follow the manual uninstall instructions as previously posted or you could try reinstalling Zone Alarm first. To do that, first download and save the latest version of ZA you were using from from the Zone Labs site. Now boot your computer into the Safe Mode and then run the installation selecting a 'clean' install when asked. That should work and if not, you can still manually uninstall.

The likely reason for losing your connection with ZA running is that you did not have your DHCP server IP in the Trusted zone of the ZA Firewall > Zones panel. To Finding DNS and DCHP servers, etc

    1. Go to Run type in command , hit 'ok', and type ipconfig /all then press enter. In the returned data list will be a line DNS and DHCP Servers with the IP address(s) listed out to the side.
    2. In ZA on your machine on the Firewall>Zones tab click Add and then select IP Address. Make sure the Zone is set to Trusted.
    3. Click OK and then Apply and see if that works to fix it..
