Trying to Clean the machine!

Good Morning,

I think this machine has the Antivirus XP 2008 virus. That was the popup that I saw just before things started to go down hill. Since then I have not been able to update AVG without alot of work. I cannot launch MajorGeeks. I have read through all the read me messages and I think that I have properly run everything that was asked. However, I could not get the Combo Fix to run. That may be my own fault as I was having issues with the "How To" Vista Recovery Console and merging with Combo Fix.

I am attaching the posts that I could get.

Your logs are clean. Did you disable UAC before trying to run combofix?

Are the issues you listed the only problems you are having?

Hi TimW,

Thanks. I was obviously sending this E-mail from another machine. Since running through the programs you all setup, it must have cleared whatever the issue was, because the machine seems to be running OK now. When I turned it on this morning, AVG launched the updates which ran without a problem, Microsoft updated, (that was another website that I could not get to) and SpyBot was able to update. The only thing that has showed up when running SAS was Combofix, (showed up as Trojan.system.driver) which I never did get to run because I couldn't figure out how to launch the Recovery console and merge with it.

Anyway, yes I did have the UAC disabled.

I think I'm good to go. Your Read Me files are outstanding! Thanks. I think we can call this one DONE.

Lately SAS is flagging files in Combo as malware....which of course it isn't.

If you are not having any other issues:

We recommed you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.

If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)

Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required

"%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u

Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.

This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.

Delete the C:\combofix folder from combofix (if it exists)

Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.

If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.

Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.

You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip

If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:

Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.

Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
