    Hi,

What is the make and model of computer?

It seems that error is caused by a hardware incompatibility. It could be a bad stick of RAM or another piece of hardware. Try unplugging any USB devices, printers etc. and see if any change. If you have more than one stick of RAM you could try removing all but one and see if you get past the error. Then after install try replacing the other RAM to see if a particular one causes the problem.

For instance lots of people in this thread for Dell 4600 had problems with a particular brand of modem causing the error.

Hi my friend , what programmes do you install in your machine ? Go to Start - Run msconfig - navigating to Start up tab - uncheck boxes except for antivirus ensuring the problem is not software !! :wave

I've read a few threads and haven't figured out the cause. I can't understand why the Windows CD is giving the same error.

Does the installation disc allow you to get into recovery console by pressing "R" for repair? If it does then I would run chkdsk c: /r command to see if it is a file system error that if fixed might allow you into safe mode.

I'm wondering if the problem is in the MBR of the hard drive? But you have Linux installed so writing the MBR would cause problems with booting Linux so I don't know what to do about that.

I'd be curious if you renamed /Windows/System32 to something like /Windows/System3232 if the Windows CD would load further without the error. I'm thinking something in that folder may be causing the problem although it shouldn't be accessed from the install CD. It would be an easy rename in Linux and could be undone if no difference.

Usually I would say the HD is bad but in your case something about your error seems to be only fixed by formatting the HD. I think the Windows update did something to the way the drive is read and gives a false positive about hardware problems.

I would do the simple test of renaming Windows\System32 to something like Windows\System3232 (just a name that is easy to change back) then see if the when you boot from XP CD it still blue screens after hitting install or if it goes further than before. You don't have to install I just want to see if something in Sytem32 is causing the problem. If it gets as far as partitioning then just back out and quit the install.

Edit: Yes you could just rename WINDOWS but just add a number after the name so changing back is just a matter of deleting the extra numbers.

I'll be away from the computer for a while but another option has come up.

You could try to rename /Windows/System32/speedfan.sys to something else like speedfan2.sys and also if it exits the file /Windows/System32/ifsmount.sys to something like ifsmount2.sys. Then try Safe Mode again and see if it still hangs.

Edit: This would be after restoring System32's name to the original.

    Hi,

So it seems it is something in system32 which takes the MBR of out of the equation which is good to know.

The recovery console/DOS prompt from the CD is limited to certain folders. So I don't think you can get into the renamed system32 folder. I'll double check that but I have to run an errand.

I think what I would try is going into Linux and renaming system32 back to its original name. Then going into the system32 folder and try renaming the speedfan.sys and ifsmount.sys (if this one exists) to something else. Then try to boot from the CD or to Safe Mode to see if it was one of those two specific files that was causing the problem. If you can still boot to CD or into Safe Mode then we can figure out what to do about those files. If you still get the bad pool error then we know it is something else.

    You have two choices now.

You can try to fix the old XP by renaming system32 back to system32 and then renaming the two files in my last post.

Or if you want to install XP fresh then the install should now proceed. So you could choose C: (ntfs) and then choose to format if you don't care about your previously installed programs. NOTE: You would have to reinstall all your old programs fresh. Because we renamed system32 I don't think you can repair the current install. It would have to be a full format and fresh install.

It is up to you which option you want to choose. You still have an option to try to fix your old XP. Also, if you do choose to do a fresh install it will wipe out your access to Linux. So you should have your Ubuntu CD available to boot from. You will need it to fix the Linux bootloader.

does it matter rapid format or regular format

  19. sach2

    sach2 Major Geek Extraordinaire

    Sorry, just got back.

If you are good with starting fresh go with full format. Quick format is fine but full format only takes 10 minutes or so and makes sure there are no bad sectors.

Edit: Also I think you said in another thread that you will need XP drivers. Check the white tag on the bottom of the laptop to see if you can narrow down the exact model number. If you haven't formatted yet you can still try naming system32 back to the original name and renaming speedfan.sys to something else to see if we can fix the current XP.

    Hi,

It has been a while since I did an XP install. Which is the last screen you see before the computer shuts down? Give the step number of the last screen you see. http://www.buildeasypc.com/sw/windows_xp.htm

    ****
What happens when you manually start the computer when it doesn't start on its own? What do you see?

    hi again

if i put in dribers incorrect will it advise me which ones dont work

could i corupt the operating system by trying to install dribers until i find the correct ones

    thanks

    sach2 Major Geek Extraordinaire

I'm not very good at drivers. I just use trial and error. If the driver isn't correct it usually won't install. Try the chipset and graphics from here and see if they install. If they do install then you should be ok getting the rest of the drivers from there.

If you get stuck try making a new thread in the Drivers section, here at MG. Give the model of the laptop and that you are looking for XP drivers. Someone there will have better information than I can provide. Or maybe someone will jump in here and help. :)

    Hi,

I'm glad you got it sorted. Thanks for the feedback.

I'd never seen your original error caused by something in system32. I wonder if it really was speedfan causing all the trouble? Seems odd that such a well used program would mess things up so badly.

I learned that a bad file in system32 can cause the recovery console to hang. I didn't think that was possible. I thought it would of loaded anyway to the C: prompt but yours didn't until you renamed the system32 folder. I'm going to try to remember that if I ever see similar trouble getting into recovery console with the pool handler error. Thanks again for working through your problem so we could all learn something from it. :)

Great work Sach2- but XP will install on a faulty hard drive,(a few bad sectors), where Vista and W7 will not. A good sign, I have found is when it keeps stopping when installing xp (missing dll's etc: its a sign. I am no expert , but have fought many a hard drive, and just recently managed to get XP to install on a dodgy hard drive that windows 7 would not have (I know it had a load of bad sectors , as I tested it )
From his posts to date, I think you have worked your socks off.
1/ Downgrading to XP has been done a lot from Vista and generic drivers can be a nightmare, as you know, but it can run very well.
2/ However, If I was looking at Vista downgrade today, I would personally advise upgrading instead- Windows 7 takes less cpu/ram for far more useage.- -even basic Windows 7..
Reading all his posts, I suspect waterboy2 wil be back, when XP hits a bad spot on that hard drive.

Additional to your hard graft, I thought waterboy2 might like to know an alternative recovery option for his laptop (back to factory ) from HP can be with keeping data- from HP ,if he still has the recovery partition intact - as he said he was double booting with linux, he may have overwritten that.
