Trying to update my graphics so I can play Sims 2 w/ extra packs w/out comp rebooting

Hi I have the Sims 2 with most of the extra packs and my computer just doesn't seem to be able to handle it graphics wise! I can play the game for about 20-30 mins...then my computer freezes and re-boots. I am a college kid, decent computer skills, but not an IT! I need help. How can I upgrade my computer, or if you could point me to websites that can help! This was my index rating through the vista thingie...?
