Greetings, Warriorwitch, and welcome to MajorGeeks...

We need some more info from you: what's the make and model # of your machine (please include any Service Tag #s), and what operating system version and Service Pack # are you using?

Also, please download and run Speccy, a free system information tool.

When the scan completes, click 'File', 'Save as Text file', name the report, and save to an easily found location, such as your Desktop.

Be advised: the report will display your IP Address and Windows Product Key. You may delete this information if you so wish.

Then attach that file to your next post per these instructions: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post.

    *********

And, since this is most likely a Software problem, this thread might be moved to the Software Forum...

Couple of quick questions: are you experiencing any more symptoms? Did this symptom occur on its own, or did some event occur to cause the symptom?

Hi Caliban and ty! OK. I am using an E-Machine T1090 and have service pack 3.Windows XP Pro:clap:clap As far as symptoms go, I just went to use my task mgr. about a week ago and it just comes up w/an empty box. No way to close it either, short of just unplugging it. (the 'puter I mean) I haven't tried it yet after malwarebytes removed 168 bugs it found (ty btw neat tool! doesn't seem to have any conflicts with my Avast either! YAY lol) because I'm waiting to see what you have to tell me. Hopefully I have given you all the info you need to help me! TYVM:clap

    Good morning...

Agreed with TimW - try the registry fix...

Also, from your report, I can see nothing obviously wrong (other than the fact that you only have 256mb RAM!) - no other symptoms aside from the empty Task Manager?

Sure but nothing happens when I click the link in your message to me. The only thing that comes up is this: "Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System]
    "DisableTaskMgr"=dword:00000000"

And nothing at ALL happens when I click or cut and paste it to my browser. So how do I access the program TO download it please? I can be such a dummy at this stuff, please bear with me.

You have to right click the link and "Save Link As" or "Save Target As". Download it to your desktop. It will have a reg extension. Then double click the reg file. You will prompted to merge the file. Do this in an admin account.

You right click the link marked REG and select "save link as". Download to your desktop; it will say "EnableTM.reg". Double click it and it will ask do you want to merge with your registry? Answer Yes and you are done.

Ok done. Three times infact lol! The merge thing I mean. Kept expecting something else to happen. When it didn't I came back here and re-read this and realized that was all I was supposed to do. Like I said DUH.:hammer OK now what please?

Did you reboot your computer? Task Manager still does not respond?

If the reboot did not help, try the following. Double click on the border. Your Task Manager may be running in "Small Footprint Mode"

Hi tgell- I rebooted. No it didn't help. The fix you sent isn't going to work because task doesn't open at all. So no border to click. Although I DID try to click the edge of the tiny icon in the empty task box that remains next to my start button, in the lower left hand corner of my monitor screen. No go. Nothing happens no matter how I click on it.THAT won't go away until I log off and on again to Windows. Also the reg fix file remains on my desk top. May I dump it in the recycle bin or do I keep it there? Thank you all for your wonderful help and extreme patience with my ignorant self.

What happens when you type this in the run box
    Code:
    taskmgr.exe
    and click okay?

I am not sure this will work for you but if plodr's suggestion does not work, download Quick Disaster Recovery from here.

Run it in an admin account. If it detects that something is wrong with Task Manager, the Button will be highlighted. Press the button.

I know it is not a fix but the program does have a Task Manager Replacement that may help.

FYI: Quick Disaster Recovery ships in the .rar format, so you'll need something like 7-Zip to unpack the file. If this is not possible, then let me know and I'll temporarily host the .exe on my site so you can grab it...

It still comes up empty and won't close until I log off and on again. Also I guess the box itself stretches all across to the right and blocks all the other icons in my tray. If that helps at all ... sigh Btw the little 'puter icon is the ONLY thing that shows in the tazk box.

OK I downloaded the 7zip and the recovery prog. When I selected the 7zip in the choice part it told me that 7zip was not a valid win32program? I prolly did something wrong Sorry. I am so stupid at this stuff.:(

Hi! Alright I did that and none of the buttons lit up. I hit the replace task mgr one and I a weird sort of tm tp come up. But when I tried to call it up again (cntrl + alt + delete ) the empty tm came back. I then had to log off and on again to get rid of it. Now I have yet another program I can't use -- right? I suppose this is hopeless.
