First of all, let me say, this is not being posted for any reason other than my nephew asked me this over the past weekend, and I had no answer for him. I am hoping with the diverse people that read these forums, someone can give me an answer.

    1. When people who don't believe in God, or who don't belong to a church, die, is there some kind of "service" held for them in a funeral home or somewhere for their family and friends?

    2. What happens to their body? Most cemeteries are owned by a church (at least around here) Are they buried? Cremated? Put in an urn that someone else keeps?

Thanks for any and all replies. My nephew is 7. Is amazing the questions they ask. He really got me thinking and wondering myself.

    1. Many (probably most) funeral homes have sanctuary-like areas with pews for the use of people who don't want to have a church service. Memorial services are held in areas like this, or any public meeting area.

    2. Most states require burial or disposal of a dead body. This chore falls to the next of kin of the departed. There are non-denominational cemetaries as well.

Thank you very much for the answers. If he asks me again, now I will know what to tell him.
