Typing problems - could be spyware

OK, friend of mine has a new HP laptop, had it a few days and all of a sudden, after trying to install Ephpod (ipod music recovery program) the typing has gone all weird (that's why I'm typing this out for him!)

Basically, when he types on msn, in word, or even into the address bar in Internet Explorer, he'll get a load numbers and letters come out instead of what he actually types!

Thought it could be spyware related, tryied an Ad-Aware scan, no luck.
Tried a system restore and that failed

He's not talking leet, lol, but that's what happened when he just typed on IM to me, and I can't make it out!

Any ideas guys?

 

This isn't really going to be spyware, more likely a 'prank' virus type program although the line has become blurred these days. Try a full AV scan or give the Panda and bitdefender online scans a whirl. If it is a virus type program then it would require a low level keyboard hook, if you have ZA then turn on component control and see what programs are monitoring the keyboard.

 

He's just informed me that the fn + numlock had been switched on, so some letters were being used as numbers.......
