Do you look at the keyboard?
How many fingers do you use?

I have to look. Three fingers and no thumbs :(

But I can hold the fort :-D

I actually paid attention in typing class in school and do not have to look at the keyboard, except for some of the stuff like colons/semicolons and the items above the numbers. Yay for me for paying attention in one class I was not too stoned to learn anything from. Words only I average about 72 a minute, throw in signs and periods and commas and such and it drops to about 65 a minute.

I have just changed keyboard from an AZERTY to a QWERTY so at the moment i do have to study what i am typing or i just get gibberish.

i usually use all my fingers but i have to look at the keyboard for the most part and i can type pretty fast. i can type my name without looking though :) i dont do any word processing, so not looking at the keyboard didnt really seem to be all the important. the most typing i ever do is network hardware configuration. Cisco for the win by the way.

and bill, that must not have been an easy transition to make man. never seen an azerty keyboard before. im gonna google it :p

To be honest I don't usually think about it, whilst typing this I'm realising that I'm using all fingers, although not my little ones (only for the shift key!) and both thumbs on the space bar.

The azerty is not used by many counties but the Belgians seem to like it,I had to order my QWERTY from the UK.

I changed because i work all the time in English and on the azerty all the .,;'":!@#$%^&*() are in the wrong place.

Hunt and peck with two fingers, at least I got my thumbs trained to hit the spacebar. I tried some of those typing tutors but my fingers just can't move in the directions they should. I do well enough for my needs.:)

I use the combo style. Right now all fingers, but sometimes I just use one hand or a couple of fingers. Depends on what I am doing. I did ok in typing class long ago. I do have to look at the keyboard for special symbols and function keys.

I use all ten fingers without looking at the keyboard, probably because I play the piano.

Bill here is some information on the AZERTY keyboard: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AZERTY

I use all my fingers and don't look at the keyboard save for special symbols that I don't use alot (%&@$! etc). I probably average 75 words a minute too.

My girlfriend uses all her fingers on her left hand and picks with her index finger on her right hand. She types over 120 words a minute. It's crazy to see her type. :D

I also use all 10 fingers. Paid attention in typing class in high school. Got up to 90 wpm, but still have trouble with the symbols. Sure is nice to have the backspace and delete keys for word processing correction quickly. Had to learn in the 1950's to be VERY accurate, or spend a lot of time erasing (before the days of White-Out, etc.)
    It's a useful skill.

I dont look which is a bad thing ast at times my typing is BAD! but do use 3 fingers on both hands and both thumbs for space bar, depending on where hand is in ration to keys at the time.

Did do typing class in colledge when doing computing as thought it prudent for speed, thank the gods for spellcheck!

Have keyboard that lights up the keys so at nighttime surfing I can see the damm keys! not that it improves my typing skills :)

Thanks MAX i know only too well the AZERTY board as i have been working with it for some considerable time and have just changed over to QWERTY.
It was KINGSTEVE who had not seen one, they are OK if you are working in french but not really much use in any other language.

I still get some of the letters mixed up but i am slowly getting to grips with it. http://img507.imageshack.us/img507/8659/000202946277995ao1.gif

Honestly - I learned to type in the army, of all places, (R.T.T.Y.). Not as fast now, but do manage all fingers, and not looking at keyboard. How good I am, depends on how tired I get, lol!:p

I can hit 300 WPM using only the big finger next to each of my thumbs (whatever it's called :-D). That's thanks to a typing teacher who walloped those of us with a ruler who didn't type right - after that, I swore I'd never learn how to do it right. :) I don't look at the keyboard, either.

I got a bizarre one: I was like, *fifteen* living in Argentina, and my father made me take correspondence courses from the U.S., and since my handwriting was terrible, he made me go to "typing school"...well it was all girls, all learning to be 'secretaries'...and me... It might seem cool now, but back then, it was mortifying, and they used these old typwriters, and I hated every minute of it...but I learned to type, and eventually computer world came about, and it turned out to be a handy skill after all...but you couldn't have told me that back then...it seemed like the worst kind punishment, and my friends all made fun of me...kind of like piano lessons...only seem cool in hindsight...

That's only on a basic keyboard - give me one of those odd, curvy ergonomic things, and I'm lost :-D.

The last typing teacher I had, only because I took an optional keyboarding course for the credits, could average 1500 WPM. She hammered the keys when she typed, and I swear the keyboard spent more time airborne than sitting on the keyboard tray. :-D

Yeah, I'm fast enough, and I learned on cranky old manual typewriters...but I'm also *bad* w/spelling, and start cussing online--which I've been spanked for on MG--and start using shortened ungrammatical words, and then half the time when I read my post after it's done, and been replied to, I'm all embarassed, and gotta go edit and try to make it *not* look like I'm a total moron, and usually just make it worse...sigh...:-o

I'm missing some thing. Speed reading can't touch those speeds..... :confused

We always suspected she had done something to the timer in the typing program we used, but we never knew for sure. :) If you hit several keys at once, you could hit speeds far surpassing that, and no errors were recorded.

Guiness world record for typing? I guess it depends on how many you've had. ;)

I'm not sure, the program usually gives up after I've gone back to correct the first ten or twelve mistakes. I prefer pure accuracy over pure speed.

  29. Horsey

    Horsey Sergeant

Same with me. I average around 150WPM now, apparently :confused.

When I took typing class, we were lucky and had electric typewriters. My grades went F, D, B, A. Talk about improving. :-D

I still type the proper way with both hands using all fingers and not looking. If I look I actually screw up. :confused

I probably type about 60 wpm...not to shabby.

  31. Horsey

    Horsey Sergeant

Turns out I type at a normal speed - that program I used in school is wrong. I typed the same lines in it and three other programs, and averaged between 51 - 57 WPM in the three other programs, and 189 WPM in the one used by the school :-D.

I think I'll drop in on the typing teacher and let him know they need a new program. :)

I don't even know anymore how fast I am--not that fast, really...and the computer world--and not really working anymore--has made me sloppy as all hell, as I tend to shorten words and misspell them, etc...while those who work, often have to be more careful w/accuaracy and stuff...me, I just wanna get it down...

I'm a 5 finger touch-typist tho, and don't look at keys...unless I'm looking for numbers: I never did get any good w/*that* row...or now, w/computers...the F- row: I gotta look to hit that, also...

    Oh well, whatcha gonna do....

  33. whoay35

    whoay35 Private First Class

My typing hasn't been measured in years, but I'm betting about about normal or just above normal. I misspell a lot of things though as I'm rushing through to type stuff, which might bump up my WMP but make my writing poorer.

  34. :-Di can type with my eyes closed or open the typing is still atrocious!!!lol:-D
im the type that cant type!!!!rolleyes

It depends. If I am tying in Dvorak, I can type fairly quick without looking at the keyboard. If I have to type in QWERTY, I have to look at the keyboard.

When I was typing the word "QWERTY" in the above post, I instinctively ran my fingers across the top left of my keyboard even though I am tying in Dvorak. I ended up typing "',.py" a couple of times until I figured out what was happening.

34 wpm with 11.3 mistakes per minute. Of course the test made no sense and my board sticks a bit so there were more errors than there should have been but meh.
