UAC apparently still enabled.

In accordance with the instructions in READ & RUN ME applicable to Windows 7 (I am running 8.1) I put the slider to its lowest setting and clicked OK.

I did not get the popup warning, nor did I see the red shield.

I ran the various programs, which all completed okay, but HitmanPro's log confirms that UAC was still enabled.

Does that mean the results are invalid? If so, what should I do now?

No! Just attach your logs and explain what problems you are still having after running the READ & RUN ME FIRST. Make sure that you attach all 5 requested logs.

    Thank you chas.

The problems I still have are, briefly:
    System ignores Power Settings.
Desktop icons' names are in black, not white, and are no longer underlined or have shadows.
Unable to add another search provider to IE11

They are discussed in another thread http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=292692

After reading the description of your problems in this thread and in your other thread, my opinion was that it was not due to malware. Your logs all agree. It appears that you have Windows settings issues of some kind.

I suggest that you uninstall all protection software ( like WinPatrol, WinPrivacy, Spybot...etc ) and then reboot just to make sure they are not impacting your ability to make changes to your PC.

Oh and just for the heck of it, try going to the below link and see if you can add a search engine using from this link:

Those software items have been deleted with no effect.

I have tried that link several times, but it doesn't work. There is a supposed fix for that - pressing F12 and selecting Mode 10 whilst on the desired provider's page, but that has had no effect either.

I shall pick up the other thread again - there's no need for me to clutter up this forum.

    You're welcome.

Since you are not having malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware.
    2. Renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it in step 4 of the READ & RUN ME.
    3. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis. If you don't see it or it will not uninstall, don't worry about it. Just move on to the next step.
    4. If running Vista, Win 7 or Win 8, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Now goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click ( if running Vista, Win7, or Win 8 Right Click and Run As Administrator ) on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    6. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
