    Hi,

I'm using Windows 7 and hope someone can help me here because the description for the thread says 98,ME,XP! Vista and 7 both have the UAC settings, which appears to have a cosmetic bug with IE8's protected mode whereby that mode shows as 'off' if UAC is off also. I hadn't turned off UAC after a new install and so when I saw internet protected mode was off I was concerned as Microsoft had released so many updates to prevent remote intrusion for 7 SO early in the OS's release.

I did some searching and found that the UAC settings could be effecting protected mode and so on reading, decided to double check that it was in fact on. I came about another issue while doing so, I cannot click the UAC link in user account control under control panel! I assumed it was due to secondary logon being turned off and decided to try to turn on UAC via the command prompt. I found an appropriate command (although I didn't like that it was a registry issued modification versus the command for turning on the administrator account --even if they both would do the same thing; anywho) and issued it through the cmd.exe program. It said applied successfully, I rebooted ---damned internet protected mode is still showing as off, and despite having turned secondary logon back on in admistriative tools/services the UAC link in user account control is still not clickable! (I even tried to turn on/off enable dragging and dropping in start menu properties as this prevented me from using right-click to open the context menu to run cmd.exe as an administrator --why I should have to do this in the administrator account is another annoyance!).

Does anyone have an idea? I don't.. How can I assure IE8 Protected Mode remains on, why can't I click the UAC link in User Accounts Control? Is there a service which is affecting these two troubles that I might have turned off as seemingly unneccesary?

    Thanks in advance.

open up your browser, and double-click "off" located next protected mode. this should take you to your internet security settings. You can tweak your settings in here to enable or disable protected mode.

once you double-click "off" located next to protected mode. You should be taken to a screen to allow you to change the security settings. Look closely and you will see a check box that says "enable protected mode" place a check in this box. you system should have to restart for changes to take affect.
