I upgraded using the Upgrade Manager to Ubuntu 10.04 and it seemed to work fine for a short time. It would not recognise my mp3 player (Creative Zen). All other flash drivers and mp3 players are recognised w/ no problems. The system began to slow down more and more. i felt like I was riding a Bike up a steep hill. So I downloaded Ubuntu 9.10 again and now it runs real fast once again. Has anyone had problems with 10.04?? Would appreciate any advice on upgrading to 10.04

I upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04 using the built-in upgrade manager and had no problems. In fact, 10.04 was noticeably faster to me, especially at boot. Maybe you could back up your home directory and do a fresh install of 10.04 from disk.

I upgraded to 10.04 again with a clean upgrade. The only problem I found so far is the Audacity won't record Internet Radio as I could do with 9.10. Some who I forget I have to set the Mic internally and I forget how I did it w/ 9.10. Anyone have any suggestions. ALSAMIXER has to be set.

10.04 uses pulseaudio instead of ALSA

    Installation of ALSA shown here

This was of no help to me. I know that I had to reset the mics to use it on 9.10 before it would work. I am missing something and for the life of I can't figure it out. Anybody have any suggestions??

I've generally found it better to do a fresh install with the advent of a new LTS (Long Term Support) release. There were hundreds of changes between 9.10 and the 10.04 LTS release. Some breakage occurred because package names were changed - for example, Wine broke on me cause the Windows fonts package which used to be called msttcorefonts, is now called ttf-mscorefonts-installer. I would reccomend backing up your data and starting fresh with the new LTS release.

That's a weird issue. If your player was recognized before, it should be again. Normally when you plug in a player via USB, it should show up on the desktop as a drive.
If this isn't happening, you'll need to determine where the fault is. Check your USB cable or try plugging it in with a different cable.
Check to make sure that the player itself is in a discoverable mode. Maybe there's an option in your player's settings to change the discovery mode to another setting.

The default file system for installations of Ubuntu 10.04 LTS is ext4, the latest version in the popular series of Linux extended file systems. ext4 includes a number of performance tuning changes relative to previous versions such as ext3, the file system used by default up to Ubuntu 9.04. These generally produce improvements, but some particular workloads are known to be significantly slower when using ext4 than when using ext3. You should benchmark your system to see which is faster.
The simplest way to select a different file system such as ext3 at installation time is to add the "partman/default_filesystem=ext3" boot parameter when starting the installer.
