I had to unlock my root account on Ubuntu 10.04. I was devastated. Never before have I had to manually unlock administrative features in a Linux. Next thing you know, they're going to start hiding files... if I wanted a watered down, locked up, user friendly OS, I'd go back to Windows.

I'm Happy that you have to login as a superuser to make changes. Because I let my 3 year old grand son play games on this. I would not let a child play with Windows.:p

What? One always had to 'unlock' root by typing in a password in any *nix distro.:confused We must be not be on the same page here and I haven't loaded 10.04 yet, I'm still on 9.04. I'll grab it today and install it in a VM and see what's different.

The syntax is sudo [command] to protect the user from damage to their system. ;)
It is part of every Debian based distro

It is there on 10.04, but I found black screen after update NVIDIA on a clean install. I had to park that job for a short time as I am travelling for a funeral. I am undecided to fix or reinstall - It is more fun to reinstall! :-D

Yes of course "sudo whatever' and then it asks you for a password, unless you're still elevated from a previous sudo. I'm going to VM it now. Do you mean to say that other non-Debian distros don't have root protection?

I don't know how you can call Windows "user friendly". It was user headache for me plus the added expense of adding on the additional software which worked in conflict with one another. I don't mind the lockup of my desktop and putting my password in to unlock it. This safety measure is good protection IMO.

Is this your first time using Ubuntu? I have been using it since 6.02 and it was this way in Ubuntu at least since then (and most likely before that). If you are coming over from one of the non-Debian based distros maybe that's the confusion. It's designed to be the Linux distro that can be used by anyone novice or expert. No need to bash a feature that's designed to protect novices from screwing things up right out of the box.
