Hey everyone, recently decided to get rid of vista off my system till i upgrade. Instead of purchasing another operating system, thought i might try out one of these open source operating systems (ubuntu)

I have it all installed and is working fine and comes with all the cool open source applications like open office and the gimp. My first impresions are great why didnt i try this sooner.

just thought i might start a thread to see if any one esle out there is using ubuntu, knows of any good communities / websites to check out about ubuntu, and if there is a driver database out there anywhere for ubuntu.

I use Ubuntu/XP dual booted. I love how ubuntu is virus free and includes hundreds of programs and utilities.

I have the DVD version of Ubuntu, which includes more software than the CD version. If you're serious about Ubuntu, buy the DVD version, don't get the free CD version.

Why? It isn't difficult to use Synaptic and get more software.

    CD version is 100% free.

and if you are on mint-

    sudo apt-get install synaptic

MrVader, check the "antique box" I have that now has not booted the windows side in 4 months. I do access it once in a while to dig out photos stored over there.

Honest question: Why Synaptic? Why not just use the utility already installed with Ubuntu (I forget it's name, sorry)??? So far, it's gotten me more than I could have ever hoped for, including stuff from outside sources.........
or maybe I'm still having flashbacks..........:drool

    Blessings,

Well, no wonder I liked it so very much!:D:D:D:D
Anyway, I can attest that it's fast, troublefree so far, and does almost all the work for you.

I preferred Synaptic to Adept when I had KDE running also.

    Faster and cleaner.

    Love Ubuntu.
    Love Fedora.

I have been windows free for about a year. At work and at home.

My wife also and she is definitely not a geek.
The absolute best place for help is they Ubuntu forums.
    Very friendly and helpful people.
