We have inherited a number of old server that in their prime ran MS Server 2003 but are too small to do the same task in our current environment.

We do however need to get our backups sorted out. What I am proposing is as follows.

On each server install Ubuntu Desktop. I have yet to fall in love with command line operating so prefer the gui approach, plus the purpose of the machines is rather specific.

On each server will be daily folders and an archive folder. One server will be in location A and the other in location B, both sites have existing windows servers in place.

Each day certain files will be backed up from the main servers to teh daily folders. These daily folders will get overwritten each week giving us 7 days of backtracking available. Everything else will be backed up into the archive folder and overwritten every day.

At night the dails and the archive will be copied accross from Location A to a Location A folder on the Location B server giving us off site storage.

Problem is I cant find a software program that will work on both Windows and Ubuntu. I had looked at Crashplan but struggled to get it working under Ubuntu. I can always change the Linux OS if someone has experience of a particular disty that works better or comes bundled with the perfect app.

    All suggestions welcomed.

This is a list (I don't know how up to date) of backup systems:

I don't have any experience with the open source systems YET, but will be looking at them myself. You might want to look at Backula (it's the first one I'll be looking at), or at BackupPC to see if they meet your needs. Don't know if they'll be able to handle the offsite, but you could have a cron job fire off an ssh copy (no, that part isn't GUI, but sometimes GUI just gets in the way of doing stuff).

Just make sure you have enough bandwidth to get ALL your backed up data across from LocationA to LocationB overnight for your offsite solution. Shouldn't be a problem with a small location and today's bandwidth availability, but it's a consideration.

Now I'm off to solve my own backup issues. :)
