I thought I would try installing Ubuntu Linux on my older spare PC currently running XP. I've downloaded Linux from http://www.ubuntu.com/download & burnt the files to DVD, I can see the files on the DVD. Having loaded the disc & rebooted my old PC it just boots into XP. I've checked the boot sequence in BIOS & it's set to DVD then HDD & I can hear the DVD drive spin up when the PC starts. I've also installed a file from the DVD which is supposed to help if you have trouble getting the PC to boot from the DVD. There is no install file on the DVD to manually start the install.

I don't know what else to try, can anyone make a suggestion?

    Greetings nigh.

My next: 1. Try to boot another machine to that DVD - 2. Re-download / re-burn / reboot to the Ubuntu .iso. Good luck, let us know.

And, to verify - you did download and burn the file as the following extension: .iso?

It downloaded as a single 'disc image file'. W10 does not seem to show the file extension, even when you list a folders contents as 'details'. This burnt to the DVD as about 10 folders & a few other files.

I tried the disc in my laptop (after it decided to install 12 million updates) & same result, disc spins up then machine boots into Windows. I'll try downloading & burning again, but not tonight.

You may need to go into BIOS on the old machine and change boot sequence so that the optical drive is ahead of the internal HD.

With the Win 10 machine, you'll need to go into UEFI and change the boot type to Legacy — Secure boot disabled and change boot sequence as above. If you don't change the boot type on a UEFI system, it will only boot to the internal hard drive.

You have burnt the downloaded file to the CD but in the wrong way. As Caliban said, you need to burn it as an iso, and in XP you need additional software to be able to do that. Download and install CDBurnerXP and burn the file 'as ISO'. That makes the CD bootable and Ubuntu should then start. Alternatively you can do it in Win 10 by right clicking the file and selecting burn to disc.

Small progress. I've downloaded again from a mirror site which gave me an iso file. In win10 I r.clicked & burnt to disc. With this disc in my old PC, when I start up I get the choice of booting XP or Ubuntu & I choose Ubuntu. I then get a message flash up saying 'ACPI PCC Probe failed' followed by a purple screen with 'UBUNTU' in the middle and an activity indicator underneath. This sits for a while then I get a black screen with the first message plus another, 'unable to find a medium containing a live file system'.

You should not be seeing that.
When you put a live CD/DVD or USB stick in a computer, the first thing you do is access the boot menu. Then you choose to boot from the CD/DVD or USB stick. The live linux distro starts installing into RAM. You are never given a choice to boot Windows.

It takes awhile for a distro to load but after it loads, there is usually an icon on the desktop to install. After you've used the live CD/DVD or USB for awhile and determined major components work (sound, video, ability to go online) then you click the install icon. It will probably present you with a choice of where to install.

Since you already see a boot choice, it seems like the hd is partitioned but Ubuntu was not installed.

I eventually took the cowards way out & ordered an install DVD from Ubuntu. Linux is now installed. I did a clean install as XP had been running like a dead dog anyway, amazed at the speed of start up & shut down and am looking forward to exploring the other features. Thanks for all your comments.
