My Multimedia teacher was teaching my class basic html ( I mean basic we had an entire class on linking images) Needless to say as an amature web designer it was a major snore fest...any way i was backing up files and loading my web site off a usb jump drive...And as i was in the middle of a file transfer he comes up to me and pulls it out of the computer! And said that i could pick it up in july! I was using all the control in my body not to go ape on him. now i am sure whats left on my key is FUBAR and i have lost my life line...but on the 5th i get cash but i dont know if i should get a new key or just wait.

The instructor has the right to control the class during school time, but the school does not retain the rights to property that you own. If that jump drive is owned by you, then you have the right to reaquire the drive at any time. My suggestion is if you own the drive, ask the instructor to deliver the drive to the principle's office and have your parents pick it up. Have your parents inform the principle that the instructors actions may have had an adverse effect on the personal data stored on the device and that the instructor is not to confiscate the device during I/O (file transfer etc) events.

If the drive is not owned by you, rather it is loaned to you by the school, then I'm afraid you're stuck.

yeah i don't think school officials should ever take property away from students unless it's a dangerous item or banned specifically by the school...

kindly request the item back from your teacher and if he refuses politely inform him that you will take the matter up with the school principle and tell him that he does not have the right to deprive you of your property.

They're both right, if it's yours, the teacher should have given it back to you after class. OR at the end of your school day.
If it's not yours, just go buy one! :p

But when you ask, make sure it is with an apology for doing something you shouldn't have been doing in his lesson. Showing a little remorse goes a long way ;)

Agreed. A little psychology goes a long way. When teachers think you're disrespecting them, they get upset. An apology is a form of submission, which in turn gives the authority figure the perception that he/she is in charge or superior. Play to their ego and you will get it back.

I know in my school they tried to ban USB Pen drives because they think (and think rightly) that they are a security risk. But the staff went nuts, because they all use pen drives to store their work and take it home, work on laptops etc. So, they gave up on that policy ;)

At my daughter's school, they are banned as a computer security risk, and that's a common school policy. Her school will also turn over a confiscated item only to a parent only during school hours.
