I have this computer here that is operating windows 98.
I went through the Read and Run me first thread and got to the Uninstall Malware through Add/Remove programs.

I went to remove one program, a search toolbar, and wouldn't work, I then was denied access to add/remove programs and ultimately the control panel.

I went on to the MSConfig step to get normal start up and now the computer won't boot up with out asking for a startup disk directory...which i don't have. When I cancel it lets me know that there was an error with explorer and must shut down.

Exactly what were the names of the programs you uninstalled if any before getting to the search toolbar one that would not work? And what was the name of the toolbar program? Was it Search Toolbar (HuntBar/WinTools)

Why didn't you just use F8 to get into safe mode? Did that not work?

Boot into MS DOS and see if you can run the below commands:
cd C:\
attrib -r -h -s boot.ini
edit boot.ini

Then if the edit of boot.ini works, look for a line that contains the text /safeboot
If found, delete the /safeboot text from that line. Then save the file and quit the editor. Then reboot an see what happens.

Please provide EXACT error messages if you get any. I don't think that "startup disk directory" is a normal error message. Perhaps you meant it asked you for a startup disk! Also are you saying you never made a Windows 98 startup disk and also do not have a Windows 98 boot CD?
