   Has anyone heard of a tape backup system locking up a firewall? My supervisor thinks this may be the problem. The backup is inside the LAN though.

   nope, shouldnt effect it at all. Hardware firewall right? Nothing should make it lock up except hardware issues / overheating or something similar unless it is being hacked.
   
   Tape back up simply copies info from HDD to a tape and compresses it.
