There has been a significant rise in the number of 'interceptions' made by NATO aircraft as Russian Air Force test defences in the region.
People tend to forget that Putin has stated that he is increasing his military spend so that his country can become a military force again :(

For the latest 'interception' see the attached link:

Is Putin testing response times of NATO? He isn't sending out his long range bombers for the sake of it?? With most of the US and UK forces tied up in Iraq and Afghanistan, what is to stop him anyway :(

So why was the Russian Navy Udaloy Class Destroyer 'Severomorsk' sitting in Ayr Bay yesterday?

She was accompanied by Frigate F229 (HMS Lancaster), and
    Minesweeper M109 (HMS Bangor)

Picture of her also show Clyde Marine's Rover alongside.

No point having planes if you don't fly them.

The link in the opening post clearly states that the Russians had every right to be there.

There seems to be the assumption from particular countries at the moment that they can set the rules and the rest of the world has to follow them.

Just because you crown yourself king doesn't make it so.

The Russians crossed into NATO airspace as was reported on CNN,SkyNews etc.
If 8 long-range bombers flew into Australian airspace, I am sure the people would be concerned?
    Imo :)

Actually in the US of A it is our ground forces that are tied up, our Air Force and Navy haven't had that much to do other than basics.

I don't worry about Russia's military too much, we both have too much to loose if we engage each other. The thing that worries me is the tendency for Putins critics to accidently injest poisen.

I'm assuming from the link you posted they must have been in international airspace ?

Honestly, we would either wave, tell them to keep the noise down or offer them a beer ;)

EDIT: I actually remember the Cuban Missle Crisis and the worried looks on my parents faces during the news casts. And we did have A-Bomb drills in the schools. It was a very scarey thing growing up under the threat of Nuclear War. I would hate to see that happen again.

"A memorial plaque for a legendary Russian warship that sank off southern Scotland in 1920 will appear near the wreck site next week, spokesmen for St. Petersburg's city hall said Monday.

The plaque commemorating the imperial cruiser Varyag will be unveiled in the town of Lendlefoot, on the Firth of Clyde, in a ceremony timed to coincide with Russia's Navy Day next Sunday."

Looks like the tub is here for this. :major

Putin wants to bring back the cold war,he wants Russia to be a strong proud nation again, remind you of anyone?Thats exactly what Hitler did, there has been a massive surge of propaganda photo's of Putin with his shirt off in the countryside showing how young and strong he still is,mid life crisis?

Hitler did the same,he then built up is airforce and against international law funded by exploiting Jewish wealth,ATM Putin and Russia dont have the wealth to build up his airforce again he has to find a way to pay for it but I think he'll find it,hes already started assasinating people who are a threat to him I dont think he'll stop there.

Rikky's points are very close to the mark, for one who who has been to Russia during the Communist Regime, and after you realize just how close Russia is primed for a "Hitler" type leader who can blame all of Russia's woes on someone else. Unfortunately for us North Americans old "Bush" is just priming the cannon.

When you have a nation that has gone from the Czarists holding power, to the Communist's holding power, with no in between, there is little or no concept of what Democracy even means. To them it is just another group of "Corrupt Government Officials" telling them what to do, and when you see what has happened to our own Governments, who can blame them.

The Russian people are scared, and have every right to be, as the nation is run by an extremely corrupt elite either Officially or by proxy. Soldiers who served there nation proudly are found begging on the streets, twelve year old girls are willing to trade their souls for a ticket out, mothers are willing to abandon their own children again to get a free meal ticket out of the country. When you have a nation like this, with the power that they do still have, we all should be very concerned. The saying "When a man has nothing, he has nothing to lose" should be remembered now about Russia.

With the World's Power shuffle that is now taking place, and the degeneration of U.S.A.'s moral stance in the world under Bush, I for one am more afraid now than during the Old "Duck & Cover" days of the Cuban Missile Crisis. "There's rocky days ahead Bullwinkle"

    Anyway thats my $0.02 worth

I have not been inside Russia only to the border with Hungary although i have traveled extensively over many years in the satellite countries and have seen the communist regime at first hand.

One of the main problems is corruption but that is not always just about becoming rich a great number of the lower ranked officials are/were so poorly paid that it was just a means of feeding their family.

the higher ranking official were living in a state of luxury with Dacha's and private mansions where the poor were forgotten.

the quoted aim of communist regimes is "equal for all" but it is a fact that some are more equal than others.

Just check out Putin's clothes (not made in Russia) that is why the minions are in revolt.

just as in Iraq the world removed a very bad man but gave no stability to replace the tyrannical powers they removed and the Iraqi's suddenly presented with liberty went crazy.

one of the problems we have is a Muslim does not think like a christian and the do not accept our values.

i agree COMPLETELY! in my world history class we talked about this a bit, he was also compared to Hitler as you already said

if you recall, he had some guys killed who were "talking crap" about him, apparently they were a threat (though didnt Putin deny all knowledge of it?)

That statement is so far from the truth Bill, and borders on bigotry. Muslims, Jews, and Christians all worship the one "God". Moses was the Jewish leader to God, Jesus was the Christian leader to God, Mohamed was the Muslim leader to God. All three "Gods" were one and the same, and in days of old when these faiths were growing, they all accepted this of each other. That there worldly human leaders were different, doesn't change the basic premise's of their religion or ideals which were and are basically the same.

Please study a religion before making a statement, that can cause others to "Flame" you for lack of knowledge. It is our lack of understanding of others, and quick flippant comments, that lead others to poor responses.:( Tolerance, Understanding, and Knowledge of others and their lives leads to World Peace. Also remember Bill, that there are fellow Geeks that are Muslim, and a statement like that might not be taken to kindly, just think how you would feel if they were to make the same statement about Christians or Jews. Lets ALL try to understand each other follies and foibles

it was never intended as a religious or flippant comment nor intended to inflame others it was a statement of fact as quoted to me in general conversation by a Turkish Muslim friend. "IF IT IS ALLAS WISH THAT I DIE TODAY SO BE IT" that was the meaning and i am far from being a bigot,i am a very compassionate and tolerant person who believes that people should be free to express their opinions without hindrance as long as it is not intended to insult/pervert or inflame hatred.

i have a limited knowledge of the Muslim faith i admit but i do know that the mind set is different than mine I.E that to give your life for jihad puts you on gods right hand, i served many years in the military and put my life at risk a number of times but never with the intention of hastening my passage.

i regret any misunderstanding gleaned from my post and hope this will clear it up.

You could easily replace that with, IF IT IS GOD'S WILL THAT I DIE TODAY, SO BE IT for a passionate christian follower.

Deep down, western religions are very similar, and this is a fact. Its the subtle differences over the years that have lead to things such as The Crusades, and Radical Islam. Radical Islam is a serious problem, and is not amongst the realm of accepted values in the Islamic religion, any more than the Crusades would be accepted by Christianity today.

The last one was litvinenko killed at the end of last year it was clearly a message the only people who can get thier hands on that much palonium are a state sponsored group and he was killed in the UK one of the safest asylum countries in the world,if they can kill people here nobody's safe, anywhere, ofcourse Putin wont allow the the chief suspect to be extradited or even questioned and when UK investigators went over to Russia they said thier investigation was taken over and halted by the Russian head of prosecution

Why couldnt they even question the chief suspect in Russia :confused

    http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/football/european_football/article756950.ece

    The UK in response to Russia's non cooperation has thrown out Russian diplomats and;

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/politics/6901346.stm

It seems they are now testing the UK's defenses and response time in retaliation, nothing to worry about, yet,it would get pretty cold and slow in the UK without Russia's oil and gas though

The above was the reason I posted the website link in the first place. There is always an ulterior reason behind any such actions.
If the Russians decided to fly very near to US/Canadian airspace then fly inside the zone for a few minutes with 8 long range bombers, what would the reaction be from the military and ultimately the North American people?
I doubt that this would happen, because Putin knows the answer. But with Europe he is testing our defences and solidarity to react together.
