came home to a leaky toilet.. turned out the tank was cracked. Need to replace it. I drained it and took it off. now I have to buy a new one. Invariably, there is always some bullshit that I miss when replacing something. So, your experiences in what I should make sure I purachase and look out for when purchasing and replacing a new tank would be helpful..

Tank and toilet are American Standard.

    Thanks

Go to Lowes or Home Depot. Find the toilet guy and tell him what you are doing. He'll get you the tank and the gaskets and probably a brief how to and you'll be all set.

if you are just replacing the tank shouldnt be a prob.... if you are replaving the whole thing make sure you get a new wax gasket for the base.... all in all replacing a toilet isnt that hard

Get one of those "dual flush" ones. Do your bit for the planet.

Don't tighten the washers too tightly, or there goes the cistern... Done that :(

    What you'll need;
    new tank
    seal
    new bolts
    New flushing mechanism

DO NOT use a sealing compound. After a period of time even a silicone sealer
can deteriorate and small bits can plug the water holes under the rim. As told to me by a plumber.

    Most important thing already mentioned:

"....make sure you get a new wax gasket for the base..."

I found out the hard way on this item.

Other than that, it really isn't that difficult to do. Take it from someone with 10 thumbs and has trouble changing a lightbulb.

EDIT: sorry - I see its just the tank being replaced - should'nt be much trouble, either.

Yeah, most of it is just plastic screw-on stuff. As the folk said, watch out for overtightening, cross-threading (my fav. stuff-up!), and leaky seals (Arf!, arf!) ;)

That's about it. Or ring the toilet assist Help Desk! (Remember to flush yer cache)

Oh yeah, dual-flush will save you a LOT of water, if that's an issue. Dual flush bog house tanks are manditory in new buildings over here, nowadays.

It will be as cheap to replace the whole shebang since the new toilets have less flush than older ones.

If I remember it was $60-$100 depending on size, shape and seat.

Even cheaper to just shut the water off, and not invite company over!

I know a guy who decided to change his kitchen taps. Didn't shut the water off. Big blowout, old house, no shut off under sink, couldn't find the main shut off to the house. He had to call a plumber to locate the shut off. Insurance bought him a new kitchen. So if you need a new bathroom Kodo........

Eh, what do you know?! You can't even get the water to turn the right direction when you flush! :p

    ;) :D

    Hi Phantom! :)

Well, I guess "toilet" does pretty much describe my life, a.t.m.

As for the direction of flow of the poo, yeah but remember they also drive on the wrong side of the street here. Do you know how long it takes to drive a right hand drive toilet! Keep reaching to the wrong wall for the paper.
