"Unable to browse network" error

Fellow Geeks,

When I click on ENTIRE NETWORK in NETWORK NEIGHBORHOOD I get the error "Unable to browse network"

When I try to map a network drive I get "Unable to browse network"

When I right click on ENTIRE NETWORK in NETWORK NEIGHBORHOOD I get "Unable to browse network"

When I run the network troubleshooter in NETWORK NEIGHBORHOOD, it does nothing.

When I use FIND and type in the other PCs IP address, it finds nothing.

I'm positive my network is set up correctly, because it worked fine for a year, then I had to reload WIN98 in one of the PCs due to a virus.I set up everything as it was but now have these problems.

Heres my network: 2 PCs (#1 Win98, #2 WinXP) connected with a SOHOWARE network kit (2 PCI NIC cards and a hub). All the lights are on that should be(on the hub and on both PCI NIC cards). I have Netbeui,Client for MS networks, etc all set up properly.

Also, when I try to share any folders/files, the "sharing" option isn't listed in the menu

I reinstalled the NIC card twice, updated drivers for it, checked cables,and ran diagnostics. The hardware seems fine.

Should I reinstall Network Neighborhood? (Which I did years ago and ran into all kinds of problems, but if need be, I'll do it.)

Any thoughts? I'd greatly appreciate any help!!!

 

make sure file and printer sharing is enabled and both PC's are set up for the same workgroup. How are they getting IP address's? DHCP server?

 

On the Win98 machine, make sure you have TCP/IP installed. It should be listed under Netbeui. Also, make sure "file/print" sharing has been enabled (check box).
Bring up a command prompt, and make sure it has the same subnet as the XP machine. Try pinging your XP machine.
