First off, I've read procedures etc, currently I'm not at the PC having this problem so can't post hijack this logs or even ad-aware ones (what use they'd be)

    Now the problem:

I'm using ad aware SE to scan my friends PC, doing a smart scan it works fine and reports nothing. However, when I run a full scan, it gets to:

    c:\windows\i386\asms\7000\msft\windows\mswincrt

Then will not scan any further, the file is only 1kb so it isn't a case of its scanning a large file or anything. When doing a full scan its reporting 9 critical objects at this point. If I select cancel, it will not present the option to quarentine the 9 objects.

Is it safe to delete the I386 folder, or are the contents required for essential operation of XP?

Using XP SP2 and its up to date.

DO NOT DELETE the i386 folder. It is a backup of necessary file for your system. And if you do not have a true WinXP CD, you could really mess yourself up by deleting that folder. This annoying problem happens quite often with Ad-Aware for unknown reasons and is rather troublesome since it seems to have no reason. If other scanners did it at the same point you could expect file corruption or a physical disk error. If other scanners do not do it, that it is just a problem with Ad-Aware and you will have to avoid using full scan. You could also try running the scan in safe mode and make sure all other unnecessary processes are shut down.

If you have malware problems, do not post a HijackThis log without having completed the entire READ & RUN ME which means the two online scanner logs must be attached first. We don't need or want Ad-Aware logs. They are rarely of much use to us.

Many thanks, next time I'm at the said computer, I'll try Hijack this.

That is not what I requested. HijackThis is the very last step. All other steps of the READ ME must be run first. Obviously, if you cannot run a fullscan with Ad-Aware, skip it.
