Hard disk died. Got new drive, reinstalled XP Pro. Cannot access internet with either IE or Foxfire.
I connected directly to modem; no luck. Another computer connected to the same modem is running fine.
    Run nslookup, get following answer:
    ***Default servers are not available
    Default server: Unknown
    Address: 127.0.0.1

    I flushed and reset DNS
My 1394 connection is working well but no packets going through
TCP/IP is set for automatic connection

    Frustrated but hopeful,

Is the NIC ok in device manager?
    Adapter enabled?
Doing a renew ipconfig (repair connection) get you a real IP? (not 127.0.0.1)

1394 connection is fire-wire, not Ethernet, you should see a local area connection and it should have an ip.

Thanks, guys. I fear you think I am more knowledgeable than my actual status. I did ipconfig / release and ipconfig/ renew, but when I do ipconfig /all nothing shows up other than "Windows IP configuration". I suppose I should see an IP address when I do that, right?

I do not know what a NIC is. I do not know what to look for to see if the adapter (what adapter? what is it called?) is enabled. The only Network Adapter I see is the 1394.

I do have a lot of things with yellow question signs in Device Manager, including two "Other PCI Bridge Devices", two "PCI Devices", and one "SM Bus Controller"

    Thanks again,

    Olonips

    Greetings, olonips.

The multiple Device Manager flags (especially the 'SM Bus Controller') indicate that you may be missing one or more chipset drivers.

What is the make and model # of your computer and/or motherboard?

Guys, thanks again for the help with this. I realized I had not installed the motherboard drivers (EVGA 122-CK-NF68 2, or Nvidia 680i SLI). With that I got access to the internet and everything cleared out.

I'm sorry to butt in on this old thread, but I am having the same issue and am never as smart on this stuff as I think I am.

I reformatted from Vista to XP on a Compaq Presario SR2177CL

Any help would be SO much appreciated.

    Thanks
