Unable to defrag boot files

Have defraged boot files many times before using "defrag c: -b" in cmd prompt each time being successful.

Today I went to defrag boot files using run > "defrag c: -b" and the cmd prompt window appeared for a split second then nothing.

Decided to type "defrag c: -b pause" directly into the cmd prompt window to keep the window open to see if there may be an error msg.

The window stayed open, but no error message. Just dropped down another line as if to say "Nope, try again".

Opened regedit, navagated to HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Dfrg\BootOptimizeFunction - Value Data for "Enable" was set to "y".

Any ideas as to why I can't defrag the boot files?

Assuming that your using Windows XP... By default, your system can be configured to defrag boot files on startup. You can verify that this setting is enabled in the registry using the following steps:

    (1) Click Start and click Run.
    (2) Type regedit.exe and click OK.
    (3) Navigate to the following registry key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE | Software | Microsoft | Dfrg | BootOptimizeFunction
    (4) In the right pane, check that the Enable string has a value of "Y" [Otherwise, complete the next step].
    (5) Double click Enable.
    (6) In the Value data field, type "Y" and then click OK.
    (7) Close the Registry Editor.

After that your system will automatically defrag the boot files on every startup! I know this method works for those using Windows XP [not sure if it works for other operating systems].

    Good Luck!

    Hi!
We need to know which version of Windows you're running.
    If it IS XP:

My OS is Windows XP Home.

Did run O&O defrag (free) just yesterday on my HD. Could that have something to do with it?

    LastDiskLayoutTimeString shows 2006/04/28 - 23:00:54

O&O REPLACES XP Defragmenter....can't use BOTH

I installed O&O defrag on 4/26/2006. Immediately ran O&O. During install, I elected for O&O not to replace my default defrag. I still have Windows defrag.

According to the registry the last boot file defrag was 4/28/2006.

    Something isn't making sense.

If boot defrag is to run each time I start my PC, why doesn't "LastDiskLayoutTimeString" reflect today's date? I startup and shut down my PC each day.

Alright, I understand "LastDiskLayoutTimeString" now. This reflects the last time Windows ran boot files defrag and doesn't reflect the last time I manually ran a boot files defrag.

    Is this assumption correct?

Use Erunt to backup the registry at each boot. Restored the registry using Erunt from 4/29/2006 backup.

Now "defrag c: -b" works fine again. I also use regseeker to clean the registry. Could I have deleted a value from the registry that caused this problem in the first place?

"All Things are Possible in WINDOWS"!
    Just ask Bill Gates....sorry...couldn't resist

You may very well have cleared up a conflict, missing entry, whatever.
If it's NOT broken NOW...don't try to FIX it.
    :)

You're right. I know how Windows is. Now that defrag is fixed ---

I ain't gonna mess with it no more!
