I recently picked up the about/blank spyware and I have not been able to delete it. I am running windows 98. When I try to run Bitdefender and RAvantivirus I get I cannot run the scan due to my active X controls. I changed them and it still doesn't work.

I follwed the remainder of the steps and was able to remove some tings following the stpes. When I ran about buster I received the following message:

    Runtime error '339'
component 'comct132.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered a file missing or invalid.

I uses HJT to fix the issues in my registry where about/blank showed up but it keeps returning.

I am also getting pop up ads I didn't receive before.

    Can anyone help me?

    Thanks,

    Jim

It appears I fixed the problem. I read the txt file for About Buster and was able to download the missing component. I then did Hijacj this and fixed some of the dll files and it appears to have worked, I am no longer directed to the about/blank site.

    Sorry for wasting your time.

This particular hijacker isnt that easy to remove, just to confirm attach a HJT log.

    http://www.majorgeeks.com/images/grenade.gif Download HijackThis 1.99.1

http://www.majorgeeks.com/images/grenade.gif Unzip the hijackthis.exe file to a folder you create named C:\Program Files\HJT

http://www.majorgeeks.com/images/grenade.gif Do NOT run Hijack This from the Desktop, a temp folder, or a sub-folder of C:\Documents and Settings, or choose to run it directly from the ZIP file as your backups will not be safely stored.

http://www.majorgeeks.com/images/grenade.gifBefore running HijackThis: You must close each of the following:your web browser, e-mail client, instant messenger, and programs like notepad, wordpad, MS Word etc. And any other unnecessary running programs.

http://www.majorgeeks.com/images/grenade.gifRun HijackThis and save your log file.

http://www.majorgeeks.com/images/grenade.gif Post your log as an ATTACHMENT to your next post. (Do NOT copy/paste the log into your post as it will be removed).

Your HJT log looks clean, sometimes this particular infection can be a pain to remove. Reboot a few times, open and close your browser a few times to make sure it's gone.

In the meantime to stay protected I would recommend following the steps in this thread on How to Protect yourself from malware!
