    Hello,

My computer was working fine a few weeks ago, had firewall/anti-virus, along with spyware/malware removers installed. Avira alerted me that it had detected a few suspicious files, which it tried to repair and then alerted me that they had been "removed". After that "removal" Avira would no longer update, I began receiving an error when I would try to get online stating there was little or no connectivity, and everytime I would reboot Notepad would automatically open a "desktop.ini" file. I then attempted to re-install anti-virus and during that my computer froze/locked up. I manually shut it down and when I restarted it I received an error that it was unable to boot due to missing OS files. I then had no choice but to recover the system (using HP PC Recovery).

I am now back online, but unable to connect to Windows Update which is a serious problem since I have not been able to download any of the latest security updates/patches, and am also unable to download a clean copy of anti-virus (when installing it is referring to an old temp file). I also did some research and have a reason to believe it may have something to do with the W32.Manifest.Trojan -- I have the files verisign.bmp, bigfoot.bmp, and whowhere.bmp in my C:\Program Files\Common Files\Services folder.

I've attached copies of my logs, which (surprise, surprise) have all come up clean. Any help you may be able to offer me with would be greatly appreciated because I can't seem get to the root of this problem! Thanks.

This is not a malware issue. You should post in the Software Forum. There are dozens of non-malware reasons for problems with Windows Update.

You will have to be more specific. What antivirus program are you referring to? And do you mean you cannot download the file or do you mean you cannot install it?

These are all normal/valid files. If they had a .EXE at the end, then they would be problems.

Your logs are all clean which should be expected after a System Recovery.
