    Hi,

Each time I try to download anything (MP3 or software) I get an error message at the bottom of the screen saying "[filename] contained a virus and was deleted". Anyone knows how to fix this? it's very frustrating as I can't get much done. Unable to download to anything else that I plug in e.g. my tablet or mp3 player.

also as of this morning this has become my homepage even though I did not set it that way http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=69157

I have gone to IE, Tools, Options and deleted it, but each time it comes back.

    Help please. thanks.

Please do the below so that we can boot to System Recovery Options to run a scan. There will be two options to choose from. One if you do not have your Windows 7 boot DVD and another when you have your DVD.

For x32 (x86) bit systems download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to a flash drive.
For x64 bit systems download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool x64 and save it to a flash drive.

Plug the flashdrive into the infected PC.

Option1: Enter System Recovery Options from the Advanced Boot Options:

    • Restart the computer.
    • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until Advanced Boot Options appears.
    • Use the arrow keys to select the Repair your computer menu item.
    • Select US as the keyboard language settings, and then click Next.
    • Select the operating system you want to repair, and then click Next.
    • Select your user account an click Next.

Option2: Enter System Recovery Options by using Windows installation disc:

    • Insert the installation disc.
    • Restart your computer.
    • If prompted, press any key to start Windows from the installation disc. If your computer is not configured to start from a CD or DVD, check your BIOS settings.
    • Click Repair your computer.
    • Select US as the keyboard language settings, and then click Next.
    • Select the operating system you want to repair, and then click Next.
    • Select your user account and click Next.

On the System Recovery Options menu you will get the following options:
    • Select Command Prompt
    • In the command window type in notepad and press Enter.
    • The notepad opens. Under File menu select Open.
    • Select "Computer" and find your flash drive letter and close the notepad.
    • In the command window type e:\frst.exe (for x64 bit version type e:\frst64) and press Enter
Note: Replace letter e with the drive letter of your flash drive.
    • The tool will start to run.
    • When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
    • Press Scan button.
    • It will make a log (FRST.txt) on the flash drive. Please attach this file to your next reply. (See: How to attach)

With apologies for not replying earlier. I have been bogged down with work. I am unable to save the files as per your instructions onto a flash drive. I get the same error message that the file contains a virus and was deleted. I tried to capture a screen-shot but was not able to. Any advice? thanks.

Not sure if you can do anything, but give me a while and I will ask my colleagues.

If you are using IE, try this:

Download OTLPE and save it to your desktop:

    OTLPE

Double click the OTLPENet icon on your desktop
"Do you want to burn the CD?" choose Yes
ImgBurn will automatically extract and load the OTLPE Iso to be burned to CD
Place a blank CD in your CD-Rom.
Click http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/aa263/Merlin10101/ximgbrn.jpg?t=1382444390 to start the burn process.

You will see a dialog "Operation successfully completed"
Boot the non-working computer using the boot CD you just created
In order to do so, the computer must be set to boot from the CD first.
Note : For information click here.

Your system should now display a REATOGO-X-PE desktop.
    Double-click on the OTLPE icon.
Select the Windows folder of the infected drive if it asks for a location
When asked "Do you wish to load the remote registry", select Yes
When asked "Do you wish to load remote user profile(s) for scanning", select Yes
Ensure the box "Automatically Load All Remaining Users" is checked and press "OK"
    OTL should now start.
    Push the RUN SCAN button.
When finished, the file will be saved in drive C:\OTL.txt
Copy this file to your USB drive.
Please attach the C:\OTL.txt file in your next reply.

I will try to download tomorrow from work, but not sure if the firewall will allow me.

I also have a tablet that I could hook up to the computer for what it's worth?? anything we can do that route??

    thanks.

    • How did you get on with OTLPE?
    • Am I to assume that Firefox will not let you download either?

I started downloading it yesterday (but did not check if it was successful), but did not get an error message. Will check tonight. seem to be able to download from ffox.

Save fixlist.txt to your flash drive.

    • You should now have both fixlist.txt and FRST.exe on your flash drive.

Now reboot back into the System Recovery Options as you did previously.
Run FRST and press the Fix button just once and wait.
The tool will make a log on the flashdrive (Fixlog.txt).
Please attach this to your next message. (See how to attach)

Now boot into normal Windows can continue with the below.

    Running MGTools.

OK. this is not working for me. When I follow these steps, it says that "no fixlist.txt found". Did I not follow these instructions correctly? or did I miss a previous step? I tried the last two instruction sets that you gave for the frst stuff.

and now my computer has started playing random music/radio as well! :-/ And it's getting very sluggish.

You couldn't have done. How are you entering the system recovery options? From advanced boot options or Windows installation disk?

You need to do exactly the same as you did before:

I am using the advanced boot options, where i reboot and hit f8 until I log in with repair my computer. Let me try again.

ok. I now see what happened. I was supposed to save fixlist.txt onto the flash drive. I thought that the scan process was going to create the list and save it there automatically. My mistake. I am still unable to save from this computer. so I will have to do this from work on Monday and follow the steps you mentioned.

any idea as to how I can stop the random music/stations that play in the background w/o having to mute the sound? thanks.

Hopefully the music etc will stop on Monday when we get the fix done. :)

That is not the correct fix log. Look at it yourself.

Are you now able to run these procedures? READ & RUN ME FIRST - Malware Removal Guide Please do try; and let us know!

Also, regardless of that, I want you to re run FRST. (like you did in post # 15) and attach the log.

I am not sure what you mean by "Look at it yourself". If I could, I would not be asking for help from this website! :(

I did follow the instructions and that is the file that was created and saved on my flash drive.

Are you able to work your way thru the Read and run me first or not? (As previously asked)
