    Hi everyone,

Have just bought a new laptop with a win 7 OS. Have also installed office 2007. So far so good.. BUT

Every time i want to open a .doc document from emails or from the web, i get this message (attachment1). If i choose the find button it forwards me to a microsoft website telling me i have to by the software (which, like i said, i already have). If i choose to save the document it lets me do that and then i can open the document. BTW opening a new blank word document works just fine as well, it's only the ones i want to open from the web that seem to be a problem.

Any suggestions?? am at a lost!

Oh, aslo have AVG installed, if that makes any difference.

    any help will be appreciated!

    Thanks!

    Hi

First off disable AVG (what version AVG btw?) and see if that is blocking opening direct .doc files form the internet or email attachements. AVs can at times on purpose block the direct opening of Office docs from the internet as they could be mawlare infected, this is a good option, but can cause this issue, so if your version of AVG has an Office scanner option then disable it (as you have not mentioned if its Free or Retail AVG then I'm guessing as to the options it has, some AVs haev Office scanning and some dont).

Personally I always save any docs first to HDD before opening, saves any issues.

This is not the same PC that you had malware on is it? if SO then uninstall and re-install Office as a dll or plugin for Office may have been corrupted, its unlikely but never know.

    Hi,

No, it's not the PC i had malware on (the fan broke on that one, and with the malware problems i was having i just went out and bought a new one... was due anyway).

I have retail AVG but can't find the office scan option..

    Hi leiflet,

It reads like the .doc Windows registry entries have some how become modified or are now missing altogether.

    You may want to try...

    1. Create a System Restore Point.
    2. Copy everything between the two lines below into notepad and then save the file as doc.reg

    --------------------------------------------------------
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.doc]
    @="Word.Document.8"
    "Content Type"="application/msword"

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.doc\PersistentHandler]
    @="{98DE59A0-D175-11CD-A7BD-00006B827D94}"

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.doc\shellex]

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.doc\shellex\{8895b1c6-b41f-4c1c-a562-0d564250836f}]
    @="{84F66100-FF7C-4fb4-B0C0-02CD7FB668FE}"

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.doc\Word.Document.8]

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.doc\Word.Document.8\ShellNew]

    --------------------------------------------------------

    3. Execute the doc.reg file to add the entries into the registry.
    4. Open the cvn history.doc via the link.
