    Hi -
My elderly father lives out of state and I am his lifeline when it comes to computer issues. He uses a computer with Win 10 which I set up so that I can remote access. This has gone fine over the last year. Yesterday, I was not able to remote connect to his computer. So the first thing I did was to try to ping his ISP public IP address. Over the phone I had my father use www.whatsmyip.com to make sure that I had his IP address.
So, I'm being blocked but I do not know how to correct this.

The question is how do I determine 'who' is blocking me from accessing his IP?
Once this is discovered, what do I need to do to correct the situation?

Thanks for any advice you may have.
    Jim

What software program are you using for remote access? Teamviewer?
Or are you using a process such as SSH, Telnet or FTP?

Hi - thanks for the response.
I set up UltraVNC on his computer. However, at this point, UltraVNC isn't the problem as I cannot even 'ping' his public IP using CMD window and the PING tool. I had him (over the phone) make sure that his Internet Service Provider's public IP was correct by using 'whats my ip' from his browser. I also had him reload the page (Ctrl-R) to make sure the page was properly refreshed. So, I'm confident (but not 100%) that I'm being blocked.
    What's your opinion?

    Jim

Did you verify VNC was running? Have him get teamviewer and see if you can connect, then you can troubleshoot his computer & the VNC.

I initially had him start the server on his end but I could get no connection. That is when I attempted to ping his public IP. Am I wrong in believing that it is not necessary for VNC to be running in order to ping his IP address? If I cannot get a ping response, then I don't see where the VNC software running will change the situation. I am in no way an expert with Ethernet (I wouldn't be posting for help, if I was) connectivity issues, so if I'm missing the boat here, please set me straight.
    Thanks for the response
    Jim

It's possible that his firewall is blocking you.Firewalls have been known to auto block after so long.

Again, I believe the blocking problem is at a higher level. His ISP is likely doing the blocking, therefore, I will need to contact my father's ISP and see if they can help.

What kinda modem setup does he have.

I would say most likely it's the ISP.I agree with you.

Yes, I will be contacting them tomorrow to see what they say.
    Thanks

If you IP is served dynamically from your ISP configure it to forward the external port for VNC to your internal ip address port of your broadband router
    or
If your ISP provides you with a static IP, you need to forward the external port to your internal LAN port IP address and configure it to your NAT/router.
