I have been experiencing issues with Avast Internet Pro for about a month now on my laptop. Customer Care at Avast had recommended I remove the program and reinstall it. I've done that but I cannot install it at all as I get the following error:

"Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have
the appropriate permissions to access the item."

I've also attached the install logs.

Technical support from Avast stated that the Service Control Manager is corrupted and will not allow permissions for the program to install it. I am using Windows 7.

Does anyone know of this service in Windows and how I can fix it?

    Hi

I would fully uninstall Avast Pro again and then run CCleaner and its cleaner and registry tool until nothing lists in the registry scan.

Then run this Avast uninstaller tool HERE and see if it cleans any more items up

Then re-install Avast Pro again but this time right click the installer and choose Run as Administrator and see if this quick fix may work.

If Service Control Manager is having an issue, and if it was faulting it would cause many services to fail as its the manager to the services and not a service itself, but you could run System File Checker and info HERE to see if Windows can repair any faulting files of its own up, then reinstall Avast.

    Thanks David.

I have run CCleaner before and after the install to no avail.

I've also run all the programs as Administrator, including the aswclear.exe program as well as the avast_internet_security_setup.exe programs.

When I ran the sfc/scannow program, it showed no issues:
    Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7601]
Copyright (c) 2009 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

    C:\Windows\system32>sfc/scannow

Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.

Beginning verification phase of system scan.
    Verification 100% complete.

Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

    C:\Windows\system32>

I've also ran the system recovery program to reset registry to an earlier date, also to no avail.

    Cheers.
    Rob

Thanks Falcon and a Merry Christmas to you and your family as well.

I've deleted all of the 'AVAST software' registries and tried to reinstall the avast_internet_security_setup.exe program (as the Administrator) without success.

I've attached the logs from the latest setup attempt.

    Hi

Do you have any other security applications on your PC at all and if so what (e.g. Spybot S&D)?

Have you ay any point been testing out other antivirus softwares, if so did you uninstall them fully, if not you will need to, can use AppRemover to do this or most antivirus companies have a specific uninstaller for download on their site.

*do let us know if the AppRemover finds any other Antivirus software and what its name is*

DO Re-download Avast Internet Pro again, and do not use any Download Manager apps to do this.

After the above disconnect from the internet do run the Avast uninstaller again, then CCleaners options and reboot into safe mode and then run the Avast uninstaller again, then boot into normal mode install the latest version of Avast Int Pro and reboot.

Plug in your internet and get updates to Avast and register your licence code.

    Afternoon David.

I haven't tested out any other antivirus program on my computer. The only other antivirus program I have on my laptop is Microsoft Security Essentials. I have disabled this and Windows Firewall when I attempt to install the Avast program.

I currently have the following on my computer:

    CCleaner
    Glary Utilities
    Malewarebytes Anti-Malware Pro
    Spybot
    PC Threatfire
    SuperAntiSpyware Pro
    TDSS rootkit
    Sophos rootkit

I have to disable the PC Threatfire prior to any installation or deinstallation otherwise it will quarentine the software.

When I ran the AppRemover (as Administrator), it detects Spybot and Microsoft Security Essentials. Would you like for me to remove both of these programs? I am hesitant to remove Microsoft Security Essentials as I do not know if it will reload (or any other antivirus program for that matter). Or would disabling the program, including the disabling of real time protection, suffice? That is what I have been doing.

    Hi

I would disable Spybot or uninstall it and then try your install as Spybot can at times block registry entries that applications need to make.

Sorry David, it still doesn't work as I encounter the same error in the install logs with Spybot disabled:

Extract: tried to extract 'C:\ProgramData\AVAST Software\Avast\avast5.ini' from pkg 'ais_core' but failed miserably. Error code 0x00000005

Has anyone else tried to install the latest version, 7.0.1474?

    Cheers.
    Rob

    Dave,

I have run into a similar issue with Adobe. I've attached the file.

    Cheers.

The following was written for Malwarebytes and Avast 6 but still applies.

I have done this with Avast 7.0.1474 Free Antivirus and may also apply to Avast Internet Pro.
    I'm also using MBAM Pro.
This may not fix your reinstall problem, but will at least eliminate a conflict.

Set Exclusions for Avast! Antivirus Free, Pro and Internet Security in Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Sorry plodr - posted before I saw yours.
