    Windows XP SP2

I could not locate an uninstaller for CounterSpy, and there is no entry for it in 'Add or Remove Programs'.

I allowed all hidden files and folders to be shown, then searched my computer for, and removed all traces of Sunbelt and CounterSpy.
I did the same for the registry.

Windows installer still tries to install CounterSpy when I open some applications.
This is shown in the picture below.

I tried to install again, in hope that an uninstaller.exe would be included.
But I wasn't able to install.
    The picture below shows this.

Perhaps the errors will shed some light into the problem.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. - Rob

Yes, I'm assuming it was correctly installed, as I was able to use it without any problems.
There was never an add/remove programs entry for it. This is the first thing I tried.
Looking at the CounterSpy links you've provided, I have tried using those directions.
I've done everything, with the exception of contacting the company and checking my version of windows installer.

If you want CS removed for good, I can walk you through the steps. I was a beta tester for both versions 1.5 and 2 so I had to clean off the remains several times from two computers.
I won't be back here until Monday night so you may have to wait.

If, on the other hand, CS is removed and this keeps popping up, you need to run the Windows Installer Cleanup.
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301
Run it and search for CS in the listing. Highlight CS and click the Remove button.

    Yes, this is what happened.
I use CCleaner and other registry cleaners on a regular basis.
I also searched for and deleted all CounterSpy and Sunbelt entries in the registry.
Upon doing another search in the registry, there are no more entries showing up.
    I'll check out RegSeeker now.

That would be great if you could help. Thanks!
RegSeeker wasn't of any help, by the way.

    Manual Uninstallation of CounterSpy 2.x
1.Open Task Manager and be sure none of these three are listed
    a) SBCSSvc.exe (CP service)
    b) SBCSTray.exe (tray icon)
    CounterSpy.exe (CS main app)
If any are listed click "End Process"
    2. Be sure the CS directory is gone. The standard location is C:\Program Files\Sunbelt Software\CounterSpy
    3. Remove additional folders that may be located at these three places:
    a) C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application\Data\Sunbelt Software
    b) C:\Documents and Settings\user\Local Settings\Application Data\Sunbelt Software
    c) C:\Documents and Settings\user\Application Data\Sunbelt Software
    4. Run the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility. If anything is listed for Sunbelt CounterSpy, select and hit "remove".
    5. Look in C:\Windows\Downloaded Installations and
    C:\Program Files\Downloaded Installations
you should see one or more sub-folders with names like
{XXXXXXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXXXXXXXXXX} where the X's are random numbers. In each sub-folder will be an .msi file. Right click the .msi file and select properties. Look in the summary tab for indications that the .msi is an installer for Sunbelt CounterSpy. Delete the sub-folder, the one with all the numbers (do not delete the \Download directory folder)
    6. Look in C:\Windows\Installer directory where you will find .msi files. Again, right-click each .msi and select properties. If any .msi files are Sunbelt CounterSpy, delete only those .msi files.
    7. Look in C:\
if you have any {XXXXXXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXXXXXXXXXX} delete those folders.
    8. Open Computer Management console utility (Control Panel-->Admin. Tools-->Computer Management) and select the Device Manager then click on View and select "Show hidden devices" . Expand the Non Plug and Play Drivers tree and scroll down until you find the SBHR device driver. Right-click on it and select uninstall.
The console will prompt you to reboot. Do so. If you don't find any SBHR device driver, there is no need to reboot.
    9. You need to download a zip file at the bottom of my post. Follow the directions to be sure it is clean before you use it.
    10. Check C:\Windows\System32 for the following 6 files and remove any if they are present:
    a) SBAPIFS.sys
    b) SBBD.exe
    c) SBProt.sys
    d) SBRC.dat
    e) SBFC.dat
    f) eSellerateEngine.dll
I also had a file SBProt.bak and asked if it was safe to remove; it was.
    11. Check C:\Windows\System32\Drivers for the following three files and remove if any are present:
    a) SBTEDrv.sys
    b) SBHR.sys
    c) SBAPIFS.sys
    12. Last, if you have any Sunbelt CounterSpy desktop, tray or start menu icons remove them and reboot.
The computer should now be free of all things CS v2.x
This will definitely clean the computer of CS.

Put this address in your browser bar and you will get a download popup.
    Code:
    http://star.walagata.com/w/perk/MjG/uninst-cs2x.zip
It's about 3kb in size. Unzip it. Right click and examine the contents and also scan it with your security programs before you left click on it.
When you left click, or double click, you'll get a box asking if you want to merge this with your registry. Say yes to remove any remnants of CS lingering.

I assume he can not do step 4 because he can't get the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility to run.
Now I'll do searching and see how to fix his exact error. So far I found how to resolve errors on line 1 char 1. I need to be sure it says line 2 char 1.

    1. This might fix it
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/311269
basically, do what it says in resolution
I'm not sure if it needs quotes. I'll assume no.
Start --> Run and then in the run box, type wscript -regserver
    and press enter.

    2. I also saw this: This error occurs if the script is unable to initialize an ActiveX object (in this case the Wscript.Shell object) during runtime. To resolve it, do the following:
Method 2 seems to tie in with your error so do that before you try 1. It might fix it so that you can run the Windows Uninstaller Cleanup Utility.

Sorry I'm so late in replying.

Well, I think what actually stopped CounterSpy from trying to install, is RegSeeker.
It found traces that could not be found while editing the registry.

Plodr, after using step two in your above post, I was indeed able to use the windows cleanup utility.

Thanks to all for your time and great information!
