Unable to restore back-up files.

I recently had problems with my hard disk and had enough warning to be able to back it up before it died. I am using Windows 7 and backed up the drive onto an external hard drive using Windows Back-up. I am now having problems restoring the information onto my new hard drive. The full back up comes up with error. I have managed to install some individual files, but most are saying that they can't be found, even though I can identify the files using back up. Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks.

 

I feel your pain. Having problems backing up from restored files should be a non-issue. That said, you did say you were having problems with the hard drive BEFORE you backed up.

I would try to do the restore with Acronis True Image, which has a trial version. In that way you should be able to determine if the file does not have all the data you thought you backed up.

 

Are the backed up file sizes correct?

Any chance you can get back into the bad hard drive if necessary? You could try the backup again using a boot CD like Hiren's. MiniXP will give you access to all your files so you can move them, along with about 200 other troubleshooting tools...
