    Even antivirus?

From the Run menu type Chkdsk /f. It will ran XP's version of scandisk on your next start up before loading.

You may have to run defrag from safe mode if something continues to reset it.

What OS are ye using? When you say scandisk, is this 95/98/ME?

If so, try SAFE MODE instead.

Screen saver will do it ...restart defrag, that is.

    Degfrag will not run:
It could be the DCOMLAUNCH service:

    1. Click Start > Run and type Services.msc

    2. Double-click DCOM Server Process Launcher

    3. Set its startup type to Automatic

    4. Restart and try Disk Defragmenter.

Just something to check ...since is does start ....

did chkdsk /f told could not run/use scan disk...i did a bad thing and did improper shutdown to get it to run scandisk @startup..it worked then..but still unable to defrag. tried to run Services.msc told it was an invalid path etc. im running win xp...unsure on how to get to safe mode.

On boot hit F8 to get into safe ....you could also start / run / type "sfc /scannow" without qoutes and note the space ...have xp disk ready to put in drive. Run at least twice.

    Don't capitalize services

Never seen this in XP. In win98 it happened all the time, very frustrating...
    Capitalized Services.msc should work...
chkdsk /f should ask you to scan on next reboot if the drive is being used...
defrag normally doesn't care if the drive is being written to, it monitors the activity and compensates.

If you didn't said you had XP i would most certainly tell you had 98 or ME.

OK this shows that there is something in your startup files that is giving you grief. use msconfig to selectively load/unload startup items to find the problem item. I did this when running a video prog that crashed all the time. It was Norton AV causing the problem.

Probably means that the computer manufacturer has stanped the device as XP "ready" but you have ME loaded. Right click My Computer>properties and see what system is operating.

OK so now you need someone who knows more about ME than me. BUT try bootinginto safe mode, from go start->run then type "scandisk" without the "". If nothing use help to find out about how to run it eg it might be called something else in ME or try the forum again or just google it. Sorry not much more help.
