Unable to update AVG

I've got a standalone PC - not connected to the internet in any way - it is running Windows 98SE. The only program on the PC is AVG 7.5. I have attempted to update the virus definition file manually. I point it towards the folder where I have the latest .bin file. It tells me it has found the update and asks if I want to continue. Yes I do.

It then tells me it is preparing the update process....BUT then it tells me that no updates could be found at the selected location.

I've tried moving the update file to different locations and even tried safe mode but still no joy. :(

Anyone know what might be happening here?

Yep. Been there, done that. (About a dozen times with warm boots, cold boots and the occasional curse in between)

When did you first install AVG 7.5 and has the trial period expired?

Well it is supposed to be the free version but anyway it was download andinstalled for the first time 3 days ago. As I said earlier apart from the OS there is nothing else on the PC yet.

Free versions still have a one year license period.

Are you sure your downloads of the updates are not corrupted?

I don't think so unless the last three updates and an older one I still had were corrupt.

In fact I've just tried the latest again with the same result but the very same update works just fine on one of my other PC's.

I'll try again tomorrow (or the next update whichever comes first).

OKay but you may be better off posting this in the Software Forum if you continue to have an issue. You may find other Win98 users there who can comment on their experience with AVG manual updating.

Ok Chaslang. I may do that. But I've gotta say that I've been using W98SE for years and know it pretty well inside out and I've used AVG before on W98SE machines with no problem (and still am). It's the fact that there is nothing else to conflict with AVG that has me stumped. That and the fact that it says it has found the update but then suddenly it can't. Even the registry settings show it looking in the correct location.

    Weird!! confused confused :banghead

Yes I know Win98 very well too but that does not mean that something in AVG has not recently changed which could be causing you a problem.

You could try uninstalling AVG, rebooting and deleting all folders for it, and then also cleaning all entries from the registry. And then try a clean install to see if it helps.

Another suggestion would be to actually connect the PC to the internet and see if automatic updates will work. If they also do not work, it may provide more fuel to the fact that something is wrong with your AVG install itself.

    1. True. But it does work on my other W98 PC. :)

    2. Tried that. Still no joy. :(

    3. I've not set it up for the internet as I'm setting it up for a friend later and only wanted to do that when I knew what ISP they were using, whther it was just dial-up or broadband. Heck - I've just loaded Avast and that works fine. :) So I'll leave it at that for the time being and when I do connect it to the internet I'll try your suggestion. And thanks for all of them by the way. :) :major

Then it just confirms some kind of incompatibility with what is on this PC.

You're welcome. Remember to completely uninstall Avast before installing AVG.
