Just a shot in the dark. Start REGEDIT and do a find for wisc.edu.

Attached is the file from when I search for wisc.edu in regedit. I changed the file extension from .reg to .txt so that I could upload it. Can I delete those entries?

I don't know, perhaps someone else can answer. Worse case, you could backup the registry and then delete the keys. That way, if the system doesn't work correctly you could restore the registry from your backup. May be worth a shot.

I created a registry restoration point and then deleted all the keys that came up when I searched the registry on wisc.edu. I rebooted but still cannot view websites.:cry

You are going thru a router?

If so, you may need to reset it to factory settings ( Very small recessed button on the back or bottom ).

And you should check again to see if you have a Primary DNS suffix.

You were once in a domain? Could be the problem in that it is still trying to connect through that domain.

Did you happen to search the registry again?

I did and there are now no entries when I search on wisc.edu.

OK. Lets delete both of the adapters (wired & Wireless) using device manager. Before you reboot, connect the wired connection from your pc to your router and leave your USB Wireless unconnected then reboot. Lets see how it works with just the wired connection configured. Post the ipconfig /all again.

Here are the two files ip and ns, the DNS entries are still there. It doesn't look like progress. So frustrating.

Could you create another user belonging to the administrators group and then logon and try with that userid? See if it changes anything?

Then maybe try SAFE MODE with networking?

    Hi

For some reason it looks as if your Primary DNS Suffix is not budging with the normal ways of changing the entries, you could try this HERE and if you see in the top box then delete it, I dont have an XP PC anymore but the box is still similar to my Win7 one below.

also make sure Workgroup is chosen over Domain in the menu before the one above.

I deleted the domain and changed to workgroup and entered WORKGROUP as the name. Then when I rebooted it didn't recognize my password. I tried to reboot in safe mode with networking but got the following message:

Windows could not restart because the following is missing or corrupt:

    <Windows root>\system32\hal.dll

Please reinstall a copy of the above file.

    :cry:cry

    Hi

Thats a new one on me when just changing the DNS settings, never seen that affect the Hardware Abstract Layer (HAL) before, have you rebooted just in case its a fluke error?

Check the info HERE (dont do a clean install though, miss that option out)

Ok, so the hal.dll was a fluke because it is booting up in safe mode with networking now. However, it still is not accepting my password, so I can't login in in either safe or regular mode.

So, I downloaded the "Active Data Recovery Software" and created a bootable USB with it. I was at the point of clearing the Administrator password when it gave me the message that the trial version will not clear passwords and that I needed to purchase the full version. I thought the $50 was too steep, so I downloaded the Dr. Freeware package and created another bootable USB but it could not find a windows system to reset passwords for. I still can't log into the computer. :cry:cry:cry

I went to the suggested guide but since I didn't have the XP CDs, I just purchased the recommended http://windowspasswordforgot.com. I booted from the USB it created, windowspasswordforgot reset the passwords, I removed the USB and rebooted from the hard drive, and I have Internet access!!!:-D:wave:major Thank you Major Geeks!!!! You've come through for me once again!!!
