    Hi Guys!

I hope someone can help me with this one becuase its really doing my head in! I am trying to fix a friends computer which wouldnt connect to the internet. Seems the DHCP service was unable to start, so after running Windows repair from tweak.com as suggested by kez on the malware forum this fixed the problem. However, although windows connects to the internet and I am able to ping googles DNS server 8.8.8.8 without any problems none of the browsers would display a webpage:

Chrome: This webpage is not available
    Firefox: Server not found
IE: This page cant be displayed.

I have unistalled Norton (not a full uninstall) and tried in safemode but no help.

I have tried flushing the dns and reseting the winsock but nothing seems to help. I suspect its a dns issue but I dont know what else to try, any suggestions? I have tested it on the wired connection aswell but the same thing happens so I dont think its the NIC

    Thanks

Are you using a router? Is the computer connected wireless?

Go to Control Panel. View By: Large Icons. Then Select internet options.
On the connections tab, Look for Local Area Network Settings and click "Lan Settings".
On its Window, select "Automatically detect settings".

If it doesn't work, try optimizing your browser.
    Example for firefox:
Click on Tools -> Options -> Advanced -> Network -> Settings... -> Select system proxy settings.
If the process is different because of a different firefox browser, try googling "optimizing firefox".
    And then clear internet cache.

    Hi

Im pretty sure its a DNS issue as putting http://74.125.224.72 brings up google without any problems

Its not an issue with the router as there is another pc conected to the router which can connect. I have tried both wireless and wired connection with the faulty pc and neither work.

I kinda get that. So, have you tried optimizing your browser?

Also, try ipconfig /flushdns on cmd. Or just restart the computer.

If IPv4 is on automatic you are probably using the ISP's DNS servers. You could try setting a fixed IP and OpenDNS servers 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220

Hi earthling, thanks for the reply.

It's not a dns server issue. I tried setting the dns to googles dns server which made no difference and the same thing happened when I took the computer to a friends house and we use different isps. I'm pretty sure it's an issue with the dns on the computer itself, just not sure what.
