    Hey,

ive just probably done the best thing for my system - i uninstalled all Norton / symantec products !!!

Now i need some advice on what to install instead for interenet security, virus protection, firewall, popup blocking etc.

I heard that the free versions of AVG and zonealarm are suffice? I s this true or is it really best to upgrade to the pro versions???

i am trying out panda internet security at the moment - it seems ok?

PS - i was thinking of using zonealarm internet security along with AVG professional edition. - they are quite reasonably priced. Does that sound ok or will they conflict in any way??

Both AVAST! and AVG are good AV programs and provide more than adequte protection.

Sygate Personal Firewall or ZoneAlarm. There have been some issues with ZoneAlarm 6, mostly configuration issus.

I personally use Sygate Personal Firewall Free and AVAST! Home Edition.

ive just thought - zonealarm has it own antivirus product built into it - so is there any point using AVG pro - or am i just wasting resources? Or is the AVG much more thourough than zonealarms antivirus??

    just a thought

    md2lgyk I can't follow the rules

I've been using AVG (free) and ZoneAlarm (free) together for years with no problems.

ZoneAlarm Security Suite has it's own Anti-Virus scanner. It will conflict with other AV programs. Uninstall AVG Pro and see if your problem goes away.

If this is for corporate use, then there are some legalities involved with using AVG Free Edition. Also, it uses ALOT of CPU time when performing a scan, and you cannot examine network drives. Also, it arbitrarily scans zipfiles. I've found this to be a major problem, as there is a great number of viruses that come in through e-mail zipped up.

Our solution has been to author a script that uses Panda's online scanner. It's free, we never have to worry about updates, it uses next to no CPU time, it scans zipfiles, and has no issues scanning our file server. I'm running it as I write this and it's already found 84 viruses that AVG and Clamwin missed, most of which are in zipfiles.

It isn't bad to have AVG free to complement this. It has a resident shield which I've found very handy. In the case that Panda misses something, and someone tries to open an infected file, AVG is right there to snag it.

I should have mentioned that I have no problems sending anyone this script, but I shoudl mention that it is a little buggy as it uses the sendkeys method. It would need minor revisions whenever Panda updates their site. I am doing some research into IE's COM, so it will hopefully be more reliable very soon.

AVG antivirus and ZoneAlarm are working fine for me - problem solved - dont install symantec!!!!!

If you have NAV/NIS/NSW installed get rid of it!!!!

Trend Micro's PC-cillin Internet Security works well, has a good feature set, and doesn't make heavy demands on system resources. It's also been getting very good reviews.

However, Trend Micro's e-mail tech support sucks. Half the time they don't read the question, and when they do, they try to feed you something out of their knowledge base that you've already read.

Really impressed with avast! anti-virus. Been using it for about 3 months now, and a new update rolls out about every 3-4 days. I am seriously considering the Pro edition just to help support their cause. I am not using any other security software, save Ad-Aware and Spybot. I don't use any firewall software. I am on a college T1 though, so half of my ports are blocked by default :(

glad you like Avast... it wouldn't hurt to install a software firewall, infact you probably should...

might want to look into installing Spyware Blastesr in addition to using Spybot and Adaware to combat spyware...

I tried to setup Sygate once and it just seemed really annoying to configure. Partly because I don't know much about that kind of stuff and partly because it was 3:00 in the AM. What do I need to configure it to if I re-install it?

And I will check into Spyware Blaster, thanks for the tip :)

ZAISS is a bit of a pain - causes a few problems with configuration. I cant view my aol email, and java programs dont work. Tried a lot of things to sort it out, but it ZAISS seems to be pretty relentles. ALso the automatics spyware update doesnt work. Bit shabby for a £60 piece of software.
