I did a fresh install of xp pro and have run into a problem (originally xp med center ed). There is one item in the device manager that is listed as unknown and I can't figure out what it is so that I can download the right driver for it. The manufacturer is unknown but the location lists: on Microsoft ACPI-Compliant System. Can you help me figure out what this is so that I can install a driver for it.

I also dl drivers from gateway (Gt5220) and installed them, with no success. i then tried reinstalling original os bkup cd, had no effect. The device remains unknown with no driver update success through online support & by inserting all os cds, and hdware cds.

Is anything obviously not working (ie. no sound; poor video performance etc.)?

Chances are it's a power management driver/device and not crucial to PC functionality. I did some quick research and if you disable power saving features in your BIOS it should turn off the device, therefore removing the unknown device from the device manager. Alternatively, some people have reported that Windows Update installed the driver; in some cases installing the optional hardware updates was needed. If none of these work satisfactorily, give me a day or two or three and I'll try to track down the needed software.

    Good luck!

great advice dlb & joelsz. Believe it or not I did both these things right before your posts and it worked. It was a power saver in bios that needed to be diabled. Yet, the quickness and correct advice given by u 2 was great. Thanks!:):):) nice to know that if trapped i'd be given a way out off this thing that was ticking me off for a long while.

    DLB,
    Nice detective work.
I would have never thought to check the BIOS
