    Hi all,

Im trying to fix a computer of my parents which has been infected. The reason why im posting here tho is there really isnt anything new i can install, all searches on google are redirected, and it blocks any anti-virus sites, including this one... so im using another computer.

It had avg 8, which i just read has had problems which i wasnt aware of. They ran the scanner and initially it just looped and wouldnt stop scanning, going for hours and scanning over 500k files. On a quick scan, they thought they had removed it but of course its (they?) are still there.

Off downloads.com i got hijack this, but it wont install, neither under safe mode. As i said any help of virus software sites are blocked, avg wont run anymore and im more or less stumped as what to do next.

A format isnt really an option as the amount that has to be backed up is greater than any space thats between my external drive and notebook have.

As you can imagine, i'd be more than greatful for any help.

    Cheers
    Luke

Welcome to Major Geeks, Saint Luke.

If you have not re-formatted yet - please follow the instructions in the below link and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

    • If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going.
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not.
READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

    Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode. You can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools on another PC and burn to a CD. Links are given in the Step 2: Installing Tools and Running Scans section for downloading the definitions for the scanners. Then copy them to the problem PC. Yes, you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
