Unknown shutdown and error problems

Discussion in 'Hardware' started by twistedvincent@yahoo.com, Dec 18, 2006.

  1. Hello,
Here's the problem I'm having, but first let me tell you what I'm running:

    Hp pavilion 521n
    asus mobo
    xp pro....all updates
I am experiencing random shutdowns and generally strange behavior from my computer("my computer" or "calculator" will open for no reason etc....)and sometimes sluggish performance(but I think thats just bellsouth dsl).I also get two random beeps.....not at boot either.....just two beeps.I can't say they're fast or slow, just kinda' in between.I know thats vague, but it's the best I can describe it.I have run every antivirus/malware known to man(just about)both in and out of safe mode.(Yes,I've gone thru your procedure....I didn't find anything and couldn't see anything in hijack this.)I also did rootkit scans.

Motherboard monitor shows a general temp of 121-123F .I don't know if thats normal or not.I've gotten different opinions about it.If I recall correctly, that about what the temps always been.I checked the mobo Capacitors(?) for any visible signs of something amiss and saw nothing.
("My computer" just popped up in the middle of this....it's getting more frequent. It turns off my numbers lock and launches calculator over and over.
It doesnt crash.....it just says "windows is shutting down").

I've also checked the event viewer quite a number of times and found nothing.(I would actually LIKE to find something there....at least I might have some idea of the problem!)

I have no idea whats wrong....

I hope you guys/girls can help.
    Thanks

If you have a multimeter, check your power supply. If that is ok, try running Prime95 and see if you are getting RAM errors. Your CPU temps are kinda high in my opinion. For some strange reason, people use Celsius for CPU temps, yours are around 50C way too high I would think depending on the CPU and load on it.

Check your CPU heatsink fan, make sure it is working, and check the heatsink and make sure it is not clogged with dust.

If it is just shutting down during casual use, like web browsing or something, and the above things are not a problem, it might be time to back up your data and reinstall XP. You could try a 'live' version of Linux and see if it crashes while web browsing. The live CD version of Linux runs from the CD, and will not mess up your Windows OS, but it will be kinda slow. You can download them for free, or sometimes even just request them, and they will mail you CD's. Might be a good way to see if the problem is hardware or OS related.

    Good luck!

 A power supply problem, or a bad connection come to mind first. Unless you are an electronics type, testing the power supply probably isn't an option. Replacing it would be easier. You could unplug the pc, wait a few minutes, open the case and try to gently clean out any dust and check connections. The last thing that comes to mind is a keyboard problem, which is suggested by the random opening of the calculator, etc.

I did not think about a keyboard problem! Good idea. And I meant to tell twisted to check the connections, just forgot. Good info.

  5. Thanks for the suggestions.....I was wondering if it might be a keyboard problem as well.the "my computer"popping up woories me though(and the rest I guess)
running Prime95 was one of the first things I did.I ran the torture test overnight and everything was fine in that respect.
Heres the wierd thing.......it's's been about 24 hours since it shut itself down. That's how friggin random it is.Yesterday at this time it had already shutdown on me twice.
Would attaching Everest (or any other)info help at all??
how about a dead battery......would that affect anything??It's been dead a loooong time. But the clock fine, and from what I've read online,a dead battery wouldn't cause these kinds of problems.

obvious! check your system temp. Get a new cooling fan!

What battery is dead? If it is your CMOS battery, I would replace it, it is cheap, and sometimes a good thing to have. Have you tried a different keyboard? I would 'borrow' one and see if that helps.

    Good luck.
