Unmountable boot volume windows xp

Hi went to download software last night froze the computer. This morning turn on to boot and get blue screen say "unmountable boot volume". Will not start in any of the safe mode options. Is there anything I can do to boot and delete the software causing the problem?

ok after pressing R for recovery mode it freezes in the setup screen at "Examing 76317 MB disk 0 at id 0 on bus 0 on iastor."

I never was able to chkdisk

 

You need to boot from an XP disc for the process to work properly if there is a problem with the hard disk (HDD). If the computer is as old as I think it may be, there could be other hardware issues.

How old is this hard drive? XP has been unsupported by Microsoft for about a year and a half.

 

Well its old. A dell Deminsion 9100 I didn't like Windows 8 so I have been waiting for Windows 10 to come out before buying new pc. Well bite the bullet today and order the Dell XPS 8700 with Windows 10. I have an external drive back up files on the Deminsion 9100 once they stop supporting XP however I didnt get to update my recent files before it crashed.

Now I was trying to get it working so that I could get the lastest files backed up but it just sits there with the XP operating disk saying "please wait...". What am I doing wrong?

 

It's almost certain the HDD is shot. You might still be able to recover the latest files that were not backed up. Remove the HDD and connect it via IDE to USB connector to a working PC.
