Win98se; Celeron-A 466 mhz.; HDD partitioned C:, D: and E: (lots of space available on each)

Started getting BSOD and Norton Systemworks found a bad memory stick which we removed, leaving 256 mb. But we were still getting a lot of BSOD, and the computer would freeze up a lot (not take input from keyboard or mouse), especially on my wife's favorite games site (Pogo, I think). Norton couldn't find any more hardware problems, so I suspected malware and posted our problem over there with the HijackThis report. They said no malware problem was evident from the HJT log. I reformatted C: and reinstalled W98se and some applications. We still get frequent BSOD and freeze ups. Systemworks does not find any hardware problems. We update and run AntiVir and Adaware frequently. AntiVir finds nothing with only a warning that it can't open the swap file, and Adaware only finds occasional data miner cookies which we quarantine. Any ideas? Thanks.

Yup, gone through this before, sadly, you have to go old school. I would remove the other stick of ram, just in case, then start removing hardware one at a time until the problem disappears. This all assumes you do not have a heat issue or a part that not easily replaceable, mainly the motherboard and chip. I am thinking memory, so I would go for system memory and video card first.

But before you start taking bits out check that the CPU fan is working because an overheating CPU will give the faults you describe.

Thanks guys. I checked that the cpu fan was running & got software that gave cpu temp. Didn't seem too high, about 40 to 45 dec C. Swapped memory and Video card; no help. Finally got an ASUS mobo w/pIII 700 on it from eBay, and it is working fine so far.

    Thanks again for the help.
